Happy new year and welcome back to a new term!  We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break as we get back into the swing of Term 3.

- Parent Workshops. Punctuation and Grammar - come and learn with your child!

You are invited into our child's classroom in Term 3 to learn more about how we teach Punctuation and Grammar at Chilton Primary School.  These sessions will help you support your child's learning.  

Come and learn with your child in their class!

Sessions are 3.15-3.45pm on the following days in your child's classroom:

• Year 3 Thursday 12^th January 

• Year 4 Tuesday 24^th January

• Year 5 Thursday 26^th January

• Year 6 Thursday 2^nd February

- Number Day is back on Friday 3^rd February. The children are invited to dress in number themed clothing, as a Times Table Rockstar or as a Maths Superhero for a voluntary donation for the NSPCC charity. Please don’t feel the need to buy anything for this day and please feel free to use what you have at home!  The children will undertake a range of creative maths challenges throughout the day. In addition, parents are invited to join their child for a problem-solving activity, in their classroom, at 2:30pm until the end of the day. 

- The University for the Creative arts have some exciting Discover Arts Award creative days for young people in Year 6, this February half term.  These are FREE programmes taking place in February 2023 online & at our UCA Canterbury campus. See the individual pages for the dates.  They will meet a practicing artist and achieve a Discover Arts Award through exploration of creative processes and gaining new skills. These are great opportunities to give young people an experience of creative arts activities and starting their Arts Award adventure.

 All materials are free and packs will be sent to addresses for the online Arts Award days with permission from parents and carers. Young people will not be asked to have cameras or microphones on for these sessions but may communicate via the chat for safeguarding purposes.

They welcome applications from all young people in Year 6. Priority spaces to our Arts Awards will be given to those that sit within the criteria mentioned on the web pages. The young people need to be able to get to the campus if wanting to attend the Canterbury programme and attend the whole day from 10:00 – 15:00. If they would like to attend the online session, they must have access to a computer or laptop/mac. Applications close Sunday 29^th January.

- Your child should continue to be reading for at least 10 minutes every day and have their reading record signed.  As a year group, we aim to complete our target of 3 million words read by the end of the term!  Keep reading and quizzing!

- PE will continue to be on Fridays (please bring in appropriate kit) and Sports Project on Wednesdays (please bring in trainers for outdoor use)

- Reminder that the art competition closes on Monday 9th January 2023.

In English this week, the children were introduced to our new text, 'Leon and the Place Between'.  It is a magical picture book that, when unpicked, reveals a splendid bank of vocabulary and figurative language.  We will delve deeper to understand the literary tools used by the author.  The children used drama this week to understand the characters and have begun to plan and write a setting description for a circus.  Next week, the children will move on to describing the magical section, where Leon enters the Place Between (we won't give too much away!).

In Maths, the children have been applying mathematical vocabulary linked to types of lines (perpendicular, horizontal, parallel, vertical, bisect and intersect) to name and identify the properties of 2D shapes.  Next week, the children will study the properties of shapes even further, using their knowledge of shape to calculate the perimeter and area of a variety of 2D shapes including squares, oblongs, parallelograms and triangles.  They will move on to calculating the volume of 3D shapes like cubes and cuboids.

  

  

In Darwin's Delights, we posed the Big Question: How much of the Earth is truly undiscovered?  This week, we researched maps of the world, the British Isles and our local area.  It was fun to learn how maps work as well as find out about where we live or find places around the world.  From this, the children learned about the Earth is divided: through hemispheres due to the equator and lines of longitude/latitude.  We created our own map using suitable symbols within our key.  Next week, the children will continue to learn about how the Earth is divided by understanding the importance of - and necessity for - time zones.  We will study a champion of courage Ellen MacArthur and make links with Charles Darwin.

- use symbols and shape to represent furniture and important objects
