What a wonderful final full week Year 5 have had together this week. Special shout out to Anabelle, who won the Kindness Cup this week!
English
In English this week, we finished our study of The Lady of Shalott and discussed how the Lady risked the curse to lay eyes on Sir Lancelot after longing for the real world for so long. We then wrote a character description of the Lady focusing on the use of figurative language before completing the publishing of our writing into our best books.
Maths
In Maths this week, we used the four operations to solve a number of different money problems. We then built our dream homes using some ancient Argos catalogues with a budget of £20,000.
Afternoons
In the afternoons this week Year 5 focused on Art and Science. We completed the final piece of our Art unit focusing on mixing colours and painting by sketching and painting royal portraits of some of England's most famous monarchs. Some of these can be seen on display in the school hall! In Science, we completed an experiment to answer the scientific question 'Are boys taller than girls?'. Surprisingly, we found that, on average, the girls from Reception to Year 6 at Chilton are taller than the boys.
Sports Day
The children had a wonderful time at our school Sports Day on Monday morning competing in a range of exciting events including Go-Kart races, Tug of War, Sponge Relay and Vortex. The hotly anticipated Year 5 fastest boy and girl races were then completed. Congratulations to the winners, Skye and Jude as well as Francesca and Lyra, who were awarded prizes for showing the values of Sports Day.
