One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 30th June 2023

Year 5 have had another wonderful week. A big well done to Team Ocean for winning Mooman and to Bobby for winning the Kindness Cup.

English

In English this week, Year 5 have continued reading Alfred Noyes' famous poem 'The Highwayman'. We finished the poem and considered whether King George's men were justified in their behaviour towards the Highwayman and towards Bess. We wrote a letter to a judge giving a balanced view with evidence for and against the King's men being guilty of a crime. Next week, we will begin reading 'The Lady of Shallott' and planning and writing a setting description of the island of Shallott.

Maths

In Maths this week, we have been looking at Money Sense. We were involved in lots of discussions and activities that help us understand money, how to use it and how to keep it safe. We looked at how payments are changing and how we spend or money is also changing (in-store to online) and we looked at why people use bank accounts. Next week, we will be studying metric and imperial measures.

Thematic

In our afternoons this week, we have continued studying different monarchs in our 'Goodies and Baddies' unit. We looked at Henry VIII and how his changes to the church and the acts he created to unify Wales and Ireland with England and how his reign has affected Modern Britain. We also looked at the life and achievements of Queen Elizabeth I and use Twitter as a medium to share this information in a modern way. Next week, we will be comparing the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and II and continuing with our regal paintings.

Our Year 5 class assembly is taking place on THURSDAY 6TH JULY 2023 at 9am in the hall. Please come along! Home learning this week will be for children to learn their lines/the song for the assembly.
