Weekly News 3.11.23
English
In English this week, we have started reading our new class text… ‘Ice Palace’ by Robert Swindells. This wintery fantasy story is going to support our narrative writing throughout the term. We have been focusing on ‘WOW’ adjectives and turning our ideas into expanded noun phrases focusing on wintery settings like in the book.
Next week, we are continuing with our text ‘Ice Palace’, and we are going to be continuing to focus on setting descriptions using personification. Then, we will be moving our focus onto direct speech within narrative stories.
Maths
This week we have looked at equivalent fractions using fraction walls and fraction discs. We have also been comparing fractions using various concrete and pictorial resources to support our learning. We have been focusing on using the correct vocabulary in this topic – numerator, denominator, equivalent, equal parts, half, third, quarter (not fourths!), fifths, etc.
Thematic curriculum
In Thematic, we have started our new topic… Walk like an Egyptian! During this term, we will be focusing on history and science. To hook the children in, we had an ‘Egyptian Day’ where the children were welcome to dress up as something related to Ancient Egyptian times. We had some great costumes, including some pharaohs, princesses, nobles and even some mummies! Here is a picture of us dressed up!
At the start of the day, we explore the social hierarchy back in Ancient Egyptian times and how power, influence and money was only for a select few! We found that most people were farmers or even slaves! Then, we researched some famous pharaohs, including Tutankhamun and Cleopatra! We even had a chance to use their number system and work out simple equations.
