One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News 07.06.24

What a fab first week back to school Year 3 have had. They have come back with such amazing enthusiasm for all their learning and have really impressed the Year 3 team! Let’s have a look at what we have been up to.

English

In English this week, we started our new text called ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane’. We started the week by making predictions based on the front cover of the book and the first chapter and then looked at the vocabulary in the book to familiarise ourselves with the trickier words. I wonder if the children can remember any of the words we have spoken about?

Within our writing, we have been focusing on writing character descriptions using expanded noun phrases (adjective, adjective noun), verbs and adverbs (e.g. jumped happily) and conjunctions (FANBOYS/ISAWAWABUB). The children have come up with some incredible ambitious adjectives and for our final piece today they wrote a character description of Paddington Bear. They have been absolutely incredible with this and we have been so proud!

Next week, we will be looking at using emotive language from the viewpoint of Edward Tulane

Maths

This week in Maths, Year 3 have been learning how to measure, compare and convert capacity and volume. We began the week by completing some measuring of volumes in jugs with water in our outside classroom. To begin with, the children found it quite tricky to differentiate between capacity (the amount a container CAN hold) and volume (the amount a container IS holding), however by the end of the week they were extremely confident with this vocabulary. We then moved on to using our Charlie crocodiles to compare different capacities and volumes both in litres and millilitres. We summarised our learning by spending two days on converting ml to L and vice versa. The children were really confident in using the place value sliders to help them with this.

Next week, we will be looking at measuring, comparing and converting lengths in mm, cm and m.

Thematic Curriculum

In our afternoon lessons this week we have been looking at the theme of ‘your words can hurt’. We have been focusing on the difference between kind and unkind words, including discrimination and bullying. We began our week by listening to the song ‘the wall in my head’ and discussed the meaning behind the lyrics. Following this, we went into the hall and used the apparatus to ‘climb over our own negative walls’. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we explored the impacts of unkind words on other people and strategies to deal with unkind words. To finish our learning, we took part in collaborative tasks to build upon using kind words in tricky situations.

Next week, we will be beginning our topic on the Rainforest. We will be looking at what we know about rainforests already alongside the layers of the rainforest and biomes.

Home Learning

Please choose one of the following tasks to complete as part of your home learning:

  1. Write a character description of your favourite teddy at home. Think about introducing your character, it’s appearance and it’s personality.

  2. Pick a rainforest animal, do some research on it and write a description of that animal

  3. Write a diary entry about your weekend, focusing on using emotive language to describe how you felt at different points of the weekend.
