Weekly News 12.01.2024
This year has been another fantastic week for Year 3! This is what we have been doing.
English
This week in English, we have finished the book ‘Into the Forest’ by Anthony Browne. The children have loved reading this book, looking for clues and links to known fairy tale characters, such as Goldilocks and Hansel and Gretal. In our writing lessons, we have focused on using verbs, adverbs and coordinating conjunctions to describe the character of Goldilocks. On Friday, we applied all of the skills we had learnt to write a character description of Red Riding Hood.
Next week, we will be moving on to read ‘The Tunnel’ by Anthony Browne, learning the skills to write our own suspense narrative.
Maths
In maths this week, we have focused on calculating perimeter and recognising angles. We learnt how to find the perimeter of 2-D shapes and applied our learning to solve problems involving this. We then moved on to recognise right angles, using right angle finders to identify examples in our classroom, before applying our knowledge to identify acute and obtuse angles. We were so impressed with how hard Year 3 have worked this week on this!
Next week, we will be moving on to compare and order fractions with different denominators.
SPAG
This week in our punctuation and grammar lessons, we have been learning about verbs and adverbs. We then moved on to learn about compound sentences, remembering our coordinating conjunctions using the acronym FANBOYS.
Next week, we will be looking at how to form complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions.
Thematic Learning
In our afternoon lessons, we have began our new Thematic Unit ‘How My Body Works’. We began the week by a visit from a nurse, who kindly spoke to us about how to look after our bodies and how they change as we get older. We then moved on to learn about how to maintain a healthy diet using a balanced plate. Finally, we researched how different living things get their nutrients to give them energy, looking at the difference between carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
Next week we will be doing Design and Technology lessons in the afternoon, focussing on designing, making and evaluating a healthy meal.
