One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News w/b Monday 30th January - Team Royal and Team Indigo

Guided Reading

This week in Guided Reading, we have been focusing on retrieving information from the Traction Man book. We have used our skills to play the fastest finger to find illustrations and key phrases but to also answer questions such as...

English

In English this week, we have been building our writing skills up to be able to write a non-chronological report on Traction Man. We started the week by looking at statement sentences so stating facts, and then we moved on to learning about rhetorical questions to get the reader thinking. On Thursday and Friday, we wrote our own non-chronological report using those skills. What superb writers Year 2 are becoming. They came up with their own fantastic ideas and language. Miss Hall and myself were so impressed!

Maths

In Maths this week we have been looking at multiplication. We recapped our previous learning of arrays and used this learning to then solve calculations but also to solve tricky word problems. We even tackled tricky 2-step problems! We solved problems such as...

Next week we will be learning about division. Take a look at what we will be covering.

Number Day

What a great time we had on Friday! Thank you for your donations for NSPCC and the effort that went into the costumes, everybody looked great! We had lots of Maths fun all day around division and investigations.  Here is a sneak peek at Number Day at Chilton!

Thematic Curriculum

In Passion for Fashion this week, we learnt about our Champion of Courage - Stella McCartney! We learnt that her motto to her designs and clothing is 'We are committed to always being responsible, honest and accountable today, with a positive impact on people, the planet and all its creatures so that we can protect it for tomorrow.' We learnt how sustainability is at the forefront of everything that she does.

We then finished our learning, by completing the end of topic quiz! We have learnt so much in Passion for Fashion from waterproof materials, to British designers, to design features such as pattern, shape and line work, to learning finishing techniques such as using sequins, glitter glue and fabric crayons, to learning how to join 2 pieces of material together by stapling, glueing and sewing a running stitch and an over stitch. Just wow! What an amazing term we have had :)

Next week we will be focusing on Religious Education where we will be learning about the religion Buddhism.

Love to Learn

Sponsored Walk for The Royal Marsden – Monday 20th February

You may be aware that one of our children has spent the last three and a half years being treated for leukaemia. That treatment has now finished and we would like to celebrate this momentous occasion and mark the end of a difficult time for part of our community by running a sponsored walk in aid of The Royal Marsden. This will be held on the first day back in Term 4 – Monday 20th February.

Children are invited to come in to school wearing their own clothes and we would encourage them to choose the brightest colour clothing that they have. We would also recommend wearing trainers!

We are going to walk in a relay from the school, differing distances depending on the children’s ages, over Chalk Hill and to the Viking Ship and back (the youngest children will walk the shortest distances and so on).

We are asking for a voluntary donation or for the children to voluntarily collect what they can to be donated to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

We hope that this will be a celebratory occasion as well as raising some funds for an excellent and much needed cause!

Blue Peter’s Amazing Authors Competition

Blue Peter is giving a young writer the money can't buy prize of getting their story brought to life by children's author, Tom Fletcher!

Children will be asked to write an original short story, or poem (under 400 words) about adventure; thinking too about exciting characters at the heart of it.  The winning story will be made into an audio book voiced by Tom Fletcher and be animated to be shown on Blue Peter and CBeebies Bedtime Stories.  They will go behind the scenes to experience the book publication and animation process, receive a printed copy of their story, a framed still from the animation and an orange competition winner’s badge.
