What a wonderful week we have had…
Read, Write Inc.
We have been really enjoying our new Read, Write, Inc groups! We have been practising spotting our sounds and then using fred talk to read words. We have also been continuing to use our fred fingers to help us write the words in our books, but not for the red words, because we all know you can't fred a red! We have been working hard on our writing and making sure all our letters are formed correctly. In your child’s reading folders, you will find some set 1,2 and 3 sounds and also some red words. Any practice with these would be wonderful!
Reading
On World Book Day, we had time to share our favourite books with our friends! We also watched some videos of the teachers dressed up in masks reading books and guessed who was who! The Reception teachers put on an amazing performance of Room on the Broom too! What a day, we sure love to read in Year 1!
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.
Reading folders - All children will bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Friday.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!
Please ensure that the reading folders are being placed in the reading-coloured trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
This week we learnt how to double a number by adding it to itself and we discussed how this is the same as multiplying the number by two, or making two groups of the number. Then we used part part whole models and rolled a dice to practice doubling single digit numbers. Once we were confident with this, we used our part part whole models with Base 10 to work out how to double 2-digit numbers! First we made the number in our whole, then we partitioned it into tens and ones. Next we doubled each part to find the answer, take a look!
Next week we will be learning about division.
Thematic
This week in our thematic topic ‘Explorers’ we have been looking at Geography. We learnt that the UK is an island and learnt all about the seas which surround it. First, we reviewed the four countries and capitals of the UK, then we drew and labelled maps with the four seas! On World Book Day, we read the story ‘How to find Gold’ by Viviane Schwarz. We discussed what they used to get to the gold and how they used and made many maps! We linked this to our previous learning about Captain Cook and Charles Darwin. We then learnt all about the compass points. We began by having to run to each point on the playground. We ended the lesson by creating our own maps, making sure we added our own compass rose! To finish the week, we learnt more about the world by visiting the Seven Continents Museum! We exploring the the terrain of each continent and reading up about them to find out about their size and the species of animals that live in each, take a look!
Next week we will be doing some computing.
Art
This week were shown how to make thumb pots by first sticking our thumb into a ball of clay, then rotating the clay round and round in the palm of our hand, trying to pinch an even thickness with our thumb and fingers as we formed our pots. Take a look at our lovely pots!
Love to Learn
We would love for you to take this week to continue reading for pleasure. Check out this link to watch some of the Masked Reader videos from World Book Da. Can you teach which of the teachers is hiding behind the mask?! Please note the password for the Masked Reader videos is WBD24

You are invited to enter a competition to create a poster maybe showing how a certain type of technology has changed over time, or even the advancement of time-telling technology itself. Budding poster makers could also go futuristic, showing us how they think the world might look in years to come. You could perhaps look at nature – lifecycles, lifespans, evolution and hibernation – nature is full of timely topics. Your poster must only be A4 or A3 size. It will be scanned so it must be flat. There will be prizes in school and also our 5 best entries from across the school will be entered to a national competition. Here is what the judges will be looking for:
