One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! w/b: 30.1.23

What a fun-filled week we have had! Read on to see what we have been learning about...

Read, Write Inc

This week we have continued learning our sounds. We have paid special attention to sounds that appear in words less frequently and some of us have even started learning our Set 4 further additional sounds! We have been reading our red and green words with our learning partners every day and building fluency with our texts. In writing this week some of us were tasked with writing about having a food fight and getting our best shirt dirty, so we grabbed some sauces and squeezed and squirted them all over T-shirts for inspiration. Look how dirty they got!

In each reading folder, there is a sound card and list of red words. Any practise with these at home would be extremely helpful and support your child’s reading and writing at home.

Every morning can all children place their reading folders inside their house trays in the conservatory please :) This helps us keep track of their reading and how many books they have read. Thank you.

Maths

This week in maths we measured and ordered the mass of objects by comparing them against one another. We used balancing scales to help measure the weights. Take a look at our wonderful ordering!

Number Day 2023!

We had a wonderful Number Day! We read the book Equal Shmequal and had to find equal amounts of mass around the classroom! We then read the story one is a snail and ten is a crab. We had to use these animals to make certain numbers! We all did so well. We did lots of fun math dances, songs and busy time activities too! Take a look at our wonderful work and day we had!

Thematic Curriculum

This week in Design Technology we put everything we learnt about healthy and unhealthy eating into practice. First we used the Eatwell Guide to help us plan a healthy meal, then we made our healthy meal! We were able to choose from a selection of ingredients and used knives to cut fruit and vegetables and spread fats. After checking that we had the right proportion of food groups on our plate, we got to taste and evaluate our yummy meals!

We also had lots of fun on Computing Day. We spent time discussing what technology is and spotting examples of it around the classroom, items such as whiteboards, pencil sharpeners, tape dispensers. Then we focussed on desktop computers and laptops, spotting the similarities and differences and learning the names of the parts. Finally, we got to use the laptops ourselves to practice our mouse skills and how to change the colour and thickness of our brush on a painting app. Take a look at our learning!

Next week…

Monday is our I Care About Me! Exit point - don't forget to bring in your pyjamas, slippers, teddy and blanket in a bag for an afternoon sleep workshop!

In Maths, we will be exploring volume and capacity.

Healthy Relationships Week & Online Safety week: In PSHE, we will be learning about online safety and our champion of courage, Elizabeth Blackwell.

Love to Learn:

This week we would love for you to practice your computing skills! If you have access to a computer this will help you work on your mouse and trackpad skills, but you can also complete the task on an ipad or smartphone. Use the toolbar to search for the paintz.app and see if you can create a picture using a range of colours and brushstroke sizes. Work can be printed and stuck into books, or simply take a screenshot and email if easier.

Other news:

Sponsored Walk for The Royal Marsden – Monday 20th February

You may be aware that one of our children has spent the last three and a half years being treated for leukaemia. That treatment has now finished and we would like to celebrate this momentous occasion and mark the end of a difficult time for part of our community by running a sponsored walk in aid of The Royal Marsden. This will be held on the first day back in Term 4 – Monday 20th February.

Children are invited to come in to school wearing their own clothes and we would encourage them to choose the brightest colour clothing that they have. We would also recommend wearing trainers!

We are going to walk in a relay from the school, differing distances depending on the children’s ages, over Chalk Hill and to the Viking Ship and back (the youngest children will walk the shortest distances and so on).

We are asking for a voluntary donation or for the children to voluntarily collect what they can to be donated to The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

We hope that this will be a celebratory occasion as well as raising some funds for an excellent and much needed cause!

Sports Project will remain on Tuesdays, as will P.E. on Thursdays.

Doors will continue to open in the morning at 8:30am. Registration will be at the slightly earlier time of 8:45am (doors close at this time)

Read at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly and there are also individual class prizes to be won :)

Mrs Howard will be teaching Team Topaz on a Wednesday and Team Aqua on a Thursday.
