Weekly News! 1.12.23
What a great week it has been in Reception. We started the week with our very own Naughty Bus Trip after reading ‘The Naughty Bus’ last week. The children loved this trip and were incredibly well behaved. We are all super proud of them. During the trip, we rode on the ‘naughty’ bus, looked at and counted the vehicles we could see going past us, looked at the boats in the harbour and did a sketch drawing of a boat.
Phonics
This week we have continued our Read, Write, Inc lessons in small groups. Each group will focus on the sounds and the skills suited to them. To support at home, you can continue to use the pink sounds books (which can now be kept at home) to make sure that they can speedily recall the sounds. Children can also use the space on the pages to practise writing the sounds. If your child has a reading book from school, please listen to them read regularly at home. Books are changed on a Tuesday and a Friday in school. If your child has a lilac book (no words), please encourage your child to say what they can see on the page, can they make up their own story to match the pictures?
Maths
This week we have been learning to describe and continue repeating patterns, as well as learning to spot errors in patterns and fix these. This week we have focused on ‘AB’ patterns (e.g red, blue, red, blue or big, small, big, small) and ‘ABC’ patterns (e.g. red, yellow, blue, red, yellow, blue). Can children make their own patterns using everyday household objects at home (e.g. pencil, book, cup, pencil, book, cup)?
Thematic Curriculum
In the afternoons this week, we have been making a map of the things which we saw on the naughty bus trip. We have also been learning to write a wanted poster for the naughty bus! The children did so well with this writing – well done! The children learned about what vehicles looked like in the past and compared them to the vehicles which we use nowadays. There was some great discussions around this in class. To conclude our learning about the naughty bus, we spoke about the book, discussing our likes and dislikes and thinking about questions we have about the story.
Next week, we will look at emergency vehicles (fire engines, police cars, ambulances, air rescue). We will learn about the people who use these and what their special jobs are as well as making our own emergency vehicle in groups. Towards the end of the week, for our celebration of learning, we will have a visit from firefighters who will bring along a fire engine (as long as they are not on a call!)
Love to Learn
Your child will soon be bringing home their love to learn with a new task glued in. So that you have ample warning, the love to learn task is:
At the start of next term our topic will be superheroes! Your challenge over the holidays is to create your very own superhero, deciding what your outfit would look like and what your superpowers would be. We would like you to draw your super hero in your love to learn book with labels and maybe a brief description of what your super hero is like. For example, Mrs Cotton could be Goggle Girl, with the super power of making all children like swimming. Her cape could be blue with a pair of goggles drawn on the back. On Monday 8th January we will be asking the children to come to school dressed as the superhero they have created (the staff will all be dressing up as well). The costume can be as simple or as elaborate as you would like (we would like you to use resources which you have at home, rather than spending money). We hope you all have a wonderful break and we look forward to seeing your designs.
