Firstly, we would like to praise the wonderful children in Reception for their continuous determination and eagerness to learn. Thank you to all who attended our parents evenings and to those who we haven’t seen yet, we will see you in term 5!

Important information:

Next term our topic will be ‘Growth’.  For your child’s love to learn challenge over the holidays, we would like you and your child to plant a seed of your choice.  Please could you detail the changes that happen to the seed/plant as it grows. Also note what you need to do to the seed/plant in order to help it grow.  You could do this by taking photos or asking your child to draw a picture of the seed/plant at various stages of growth.  We ask that you return your child’s love to learn book by Wednesday 19th April. We understand your seed may not be fully grown by then but hopefully the children will have seen some changes. They are welcome to bring in their plant to show if they wish.    

Phonics

In Read Write Inc, the children have been learning ‘Red words’ which are Words they cannot phonetically sound out, so they have to remember them when reading and writing. We are encouraging children to notice these words in stories and when writing independently. When writing independently, the children are recognising sentence structures and are able to recall capital letters, finger spaces and full stops on top of checking their writing when they have finished.

Maths

In Maths this week, the children have been comparing weight and height in estimating and testing predicting. Reception had to predict what would happen if we poured a tall, thin jug of water into a shallow small dish then, using a range of different shaped containers, sharing their predictions with each other in small groups. The children were able to explain their thoughts and explain why they had made their predictions based on evidence. We also looked at pattern possibilities using three different colourers.

Topic

This week, the children have been learning all things Easter. We began the week learning about the Easter story and explored how different countries celebrate Easter. We discovered that Scotland have a tradition of decorating boiled eggs and having an egg race by rolling their eggs down a hill and seeing whose egg travels the furthest and stays intact. The children had a wonderful time designing their eggs and then painting them in preparation for their very own class egg race. Thursday was race day! Reception rolled their eggs and showed amazing team support, cheering their friends on and celebrating others winnings.
