Friday 11th November
We have had an absolutely amazing week in Reception!
Phonics
This week, we have started doing our RWI sessions in small groups. For this we are mixed across the year group. All groups will continue to consolidate set 1 sounds. Before children are able to read, it is vital that they can orally blend. This is where you sound out a word e.g. c-a-t and the children put the sounds together to say the word ‘cat’. Any practise of this skill at home will really help to reinforce what the children are learning at school. You could try putting it in to instructions e.g.
-
Put on your c-oa-t
-
Brush your t-ee-th
At this stage, we would want the children to be orally blending 3 sound words.
Sounds Books
As we will now be completing RWI in small groups, we ask that you continue to review the sounds already in the pink sounds books by asking your child to read the sound and practise writing the sound.
Maths
This week we have been learning to explain and continue simple patterns. The children have been learning to look at a pattern and identify what the pattern is before they try to continue the pattern. You could use objects around the house to reinforce this skill e.g. lay out: pasta, coin, pasta coin, pasta, coin. Ask your child to describe the pattern and then ask them to continue the pattern using the correct objects.
Next week in maths, we will be learning to compare amounts by using the words more and fewer. We will also be learning that if a set of objects is rearranged, the number of objects stays the same.
Topic/Healthy Relationships Week
This week we have been learning about why people celebrate Fireworks Night. We have learned the story about Guy Fawkes and made our own Guy. We have listened to the noises fireworks make and explained whether we like the sounds or not. At the end of the week, we learned about being safe at firework and bonfire events. To end our topic, we created a pretend bonfire at school and ate marshmallows!
Next week, we will be focusing on Healthy Relationships. This is something which the whole school will be learning about. In Reception, we will be focusing on which adults the children can talk to if they need to and how we can stay safe at school. We will also be learning about what ‘falling out’ is and what we can do if this happens with our friends. The whole school will also have a focus on empathy and kindness, learning what we can do when our friends are feeling sad.
PE
A reminder that children should come in to school on a Friday in their PE kits.
Children should come in to school on a Wednesday in their school uniform, but with trainers.
Junk modelling
If you have any junk modelling (boxes, egg cartons, yoghurt pots etc) at home, please send them in to school so we can use them. Thank you!
