Pupil Action Benefits Life at Chilton

A junior leadership team is making an effective impact at Chilton Primary in Ramsgate.

The elected representatives from Year 2 to Year 6 are working on an action plan of ideas that they believe will benefit the school.

The last initiative is improving playtime provision and the group held an outdoor site meeting with Head of School Alex McAuley to explain their views and show him their ideas.

From this, the school has widened the range of activities on offer, based on the children's ideas and have secured funding from the Chiron Fundraisers community foundation to improve this offer even further.

The JLT was voted for by their form mates with one representative for each class. Their overall is to raise issues that are important to pupils and work alongside the senior leadership team to create positive changes around the school.

After collating information the children found a number of common ideas and evolved six targets for the year ahead.

As well as expanded playtime activities, these included starting up a buddy system to support children who find it hard to come to school and creating clubs for children that are run by children.

Mr McAuley said: “Chilton has a strong and effective tradition of listening to pupil voice. It is important for our young people to care about each other and their daily community – the junior leadership team is their voice and senior staff listen to them opinions.

“The children love their fortnightly meetings and are excited to see their thoughts and ideas impacting the school already.”

Chilton Primary is part of the Viking Academy Trust with Upton Junior School, Broadstairs, and Ramsgate Arts Primary.
