One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 15.11.24

We have had a wonderful week in Year 3, with some of our work focussing on World Kindness Day. What a wonderfully kind group of Year 3s we have here at Chilton! Have a look at what we got up to this week-

Guided Reading

In Guided Reading, we continued our learning on The Green Ship by Quentin Blake. We began the week by finishing the book and then clarifying   unfamiliar vocabulary to better understand what we had read. We then explored how using pictures within a text can support us with comprehension. In order the summarise the story, we created story maps covering the key elements of the plot. We ended the week by drawing our own illustrations in the style of Quentin Blake.

Next week, we will be continuing with The Green Ship.

English

In English this week, we continued our writing based on The Green Ship. We began English by creating our own emotive drawings of the storm using charcoal. Then, we up-levelled exciting vocabulary to help describe the bleak weather. Exploring our 5 senses, we considered different ways to describe the stormy setting of The Green Ship and used verbs to depict how different elements of the storm behaved. We finished the week by practising our editing skills, identifying different ways to improve our writing.

Next week, we will continue with The Green Ship with our writing focussing on character descriptions.

Maths

In Maths this week we have begun our learning on Geometry. We started the week by recapping our knowledge on 2D shapes and learnt how to identify regular and irregular polygons. We then began to sort shapes using lines of symmetry and noticed that regular polygons lines of symmetry are indicative of the number of sides they have. We finished the week by looking perimeter, calculating the perimeter of different polygons.

Next week in Maths we will be looking at Statistics.

Fact of the week

Next week, the fact of the week is 2X11=22 and 11X2=22.

PSHE

In PSHE this week we celebrated World Kindness Day by completing a kindness quest. We tackled different kindness tasks, even delivering sweets to the adults of the school to make them smile. We thought about what kind act we could perform at home for our families! Looking at Chilton as a ‘Telling School’ we spoke about the importance of speaking up to stop unkindness. Having important discussions around STOP (Start Telling Other People) we further explored what is necessary to report but also what isn’t.  We explored the difference between unkindness and bullying and what to do in either situation.

Home Learning

Continuing on from our Geometry learning in Maths can you identify different 2D shapes? You could try sorting them into groups such as regular or irregular, or explore the lines of symmetry within them.

Other News

-Please can we ask that the children bring in a shoe box for our Science learning. We will need these by the 18th November.

-We will now be completing regular timetables quizzes. This term we are focussing on our 5, 10 and 3 times tables. Please be sure to practise with your child at home. Another great way for them to practise is to play ‘Jamming’ on TTRS and ensure 2s, 5s and 10s have been selected. If your child is beginning to find this easy, try adding in 3s! It would also be helpful for your children to begin playing Garage more regularly.

- Year 3 children should be reading 4x weekly. Please ensure you are reading with your child as much as possible to support them in their reading progress and make a note of this in their Reading Record.
