Oh my goodness, the children have truly blown us away with their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn all the new and exciting things we have on offer at school this week! This week has been all about kindness, and I can honestly say that the children have embraced this theme with open arms. It has been heartwarming to see them practising acts of kindness towards one another and even extending their compassion beyond the classroom.
English
We are so proud of all the hard work your children are putting into mastering their 2 and 3 sounds. It has been wonderful to observe their progress as they begin to apply these sounds seamlessly in their writing. Please continue to encourage them to practise these sounds at home; your support is invaluable! The concept of 'red words' can be quite tricky. However, our Year 2 pupils have been working tirelessly to nail down the spellings of these challenging words—even when they can't 'Fred' them. Your encouragement at home will help reinforce their learning.
In our English lessons, we have been exploring the story of "The Gruffalo’s Child." The children have been diving into the world of descriptive writing, using nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs to create vivid descriptions that truly bring their writing to life. We’ve even set ourselves the challenge of incorporating conjunctions into our sentences, which has added complexity and depth to their work.
Reading
Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.
Reading folders – Some children will continue to bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed by an adult.
The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!
Some children have been moved onto the accelerated reader programme. We will continue to assess and move more children onto this when they are ready. Children can change these books after they have completed the quiz online. The AR login can be found here… https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/1892319
For a guide on how to use Accelerated Reader please click here… https://www.chiltonprimary.co.uk/accelerated-reader
Please ensure that the reading folders are placed in the reading trays/baskets, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!
Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.
Maths
We have begun our journey into the world of multiplication, and it has been quite an engaging experience for the children! We started our lesson by exploring odd and even numbers, which set a solid foundation for understanding multiplication concepts. This exploration is essential, as it helps students recognise number patterns and build confidence in their mathematical abilities. Following that, we delved into the idea of equal groups. The children quickly grasped how to use repeated addition to represent groups of numbers, which is a crucial skill in understanding multiplication.
To further these concepts, we have introduced arrays to the class. Arrays are a fantastic visual tool, allowing students to organise objects in rows and columns. This method not only simplifies the process of multiplication but also enables the children to create and write multiplication statements confidently.
As we continue to develop these skills, I encourage you to support your child at home by practising multiplication facts together. Simple activities like grouping household items or using visual aids can enhance their understanding and make learning fun.
PSHE
I wanted to share some lovely moments from this week as we celebrated World Kindness Week, particularly our special Kindness Day on Wednesday. It’s been a fantastic opportunity for our children to learn about being kind to themselves and those around them.
Throughout the week, we've been chatting about what it means to show kindness and how important it is to take care of ourselves. The children have explored how good food choices, hygiene, exercise, and proper sleep can contribute to their wellbeing. It’s been great to see them really engage with these ideas!
We also talked about friendships and how our actions can impact our peers. The kids have truly embraced the spirit of kindness, and I’ve seen so many wonderful examples of them being kind to each other. It’s heartening to see them put what they've learned into practice.
I encourage you to keep the kindness conversation going at home. Maybe you could share your own stories of kindness or discuss ways your family can show a little more kindness each day. Every bit of encouragement helps reinforce what we’re working on at school!
Love to learn
This week we would love you to practice some red words. You can do this in any way you like! Be creative and have fun!
