Welcome back to Term 2! We have had a wonderful start to the term, beginning our exciting new topic in Thematic, 'Feel the Force, See the Light'! We are looking forward to a brilliant term ahead, take a look at what we got up to this week!
Guided Reading
In Guided Reading, we began a new book, The Green Ship by Quentin Blake. We made astute predictions on what we felt the book was about and dramatised the early scenes we had explored. We also completed our AR assessments, therefore your child will likely be coming home with a new book level by next week.
Next week, we will be continuing with The Green Ship.
English
In English this week, we got the chance to collect natural resources from forest school to create our own transient art pieces (art that is not stuck down) of The Green Ship. We then gathered exciting adjectives to help us build simple sentences. With a learning partner, we created some shared writing, building a setting description of a forest. We finished the week by writing our own setting descriptions of a forest scene of our choice, using expanded noun phrases, simple sentences and adjectives.
Next week, we will continue to focus on setting descriptions and will be using our senses to support our description.
Maths
In Maths this week we have begun our learning on Fractions. We began the week by learning about unit- fractions (fractions where the numerator is 1). We then explored non-unit fractions (fractions where the numerator is greater than 1). To finish the week we learnt how to find a fraction of an amount, as well as finding the fraction of a group of objects.
Next week in Maths we will be looking at Geometry, focussing on 2D shapes.
Fact of the week
Next week, the fact of the week is 2X10=20 and 10X2=20.
Thematic
In Thematic this week we kicked off with our first look at our new topic, Feel the Force, See the Light! We began by exploring the forces push and pull, getting the chance to complete a variety of games and activities using these forces. We even had a go on the Go Karts! Later, we learnt about the force friction, this is the force of two surfaces sliding against each other. We carried out a scientific enquiry, where we moved objects down ramps of different materials to see which generated the greatest friction, we identified this by the speed the objects moved.
Home Learning
Continuing on from our Science, please explore the force friction at home! Choose an object to conduct your enquiry with. This could be a toy! Tie something around your object so that you are able to drag it. Drag your object across different surfaces to explore the impact of friction. You can try this on grass, carpet, tiles and much more. Please feel free to record your data in any way you wish, this could be in a formal table or in pictures!
Other News
-Please can we ask that the children bring in a shoe box for our Science learning. We will need these by the 18th November.
-With the weather getting colder, please ensure that your child has a coat for break and lunch times.
-We will now be completing regular times tables quizzes. This term we are focussing on our 5, 10 and 3 times tables. Please be sure to practise with your child at home, another great way for them to practise is to play ‘Jamming’ on TTRS and ensure 2s, 5s and 10s have been selected. If your child is beginning to find this easy, try adding in 3s! It would also be helpful for your children to begin playing Garage more regularly.
- Year 3 children should be reading 4x weekly. Please ensure you are reading with your child as much as possible to support them in their reading progress and make a note of this in their Reading Record.
