Weekly News! 11.10.24
Another wonderful week in Year 3, starting with our brilliant visit to Pegwell Bay! Take a look at what we got up to!
Guided Reading
In Guided Reading, we have begun a new book called ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’ by David Conway & Jude Daly. This beautiful story follows a girl named Lila and her quest to return the rain to her village to save it from drought. This story begins our journey into Kenya and will also be inspiring our English for the next couple of weeks. This week we have used predictions to make astute guesses about our new book. We also used retrieval and summarising skills to identify and record key facts from a Fact File about Kenya. We ended our week with Reading for Pleasure, where we explored different Kenyan art pieces and patterns to inspire our own artwork.
English
Beginning our shift to Kenya, we were inspired this week by the story ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’. We began our week by exploring synonyms (words that mean the same or have a very similar meaning to another word). We looked at images from Kenya and up-levelled our descriptive vocabulary using improved synonyms. We then used this vocabulary to create impressive, descriptive sentences of Kenyan landscapes. Later, we looked at improving our sentence openers by using a variety of interesting, fronted adverbials. We finished the week by making a creative, persuasive poster encouraging people to visit Kenya!
Maths
In Maths this week we have moved on to Multiplication and Division. We began the week by exploring factors (a number that divides into another number i.e. 2 is a factor of 4) and products (the result of two numbers being multiplied together, i.e. 8 is the product of 2x4). We used this knowledge to help us identify missing factors, such as ____ x 3 = 9. Later, we used our times table knowledge to identify related division facts (if we know 2x3=6, then we also know that 6÷2=3). We ended our week by considering how place value is affected when we multiply by 10, we used place value and Gattegno charts to help us!
Next week in Maths we will be looking at Time.
Fact of the week
Next week, the fact of the week is 2X8=16 and 8X2=16.
Thematic
In Thematic, we began our week with a brilliant trip to Pegwell Bay. We explored the coastline, hunting down metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary rocks. We attempted to find suitable rocks to create spearheads and also had a go at flint knapping, just like our ancestors from the Stone Age! We ended our week by looking at a Bronze Age boat that was discovered just 30 minutes away in Dover! This can be found in the Dover Museum should you like a family trip in half-term!
Home Learning
In Maths this week, we looked at Factors. For your Home Learning, please have a go at creating your own Factor Rainbows (You can see a picture of one within our blog, but some more great examples can be found with a quick google search!). You can simply draw this in your Love 2 Learn Book, but feel free to get as creative as you want, using paint, coloured string or playdough!
Other News
-We will now be completing regular times tables quizzes. This term we are focussing on our 2 times tables. Please be sure to practise with your child at home. Another great way for them to practise is to play ‘Jamming’ on TTRS and ensure only ‘2’ times tables are selected.
- Year 3 children should be reading 4x weekly. Please ensure you are reading with your child as much as possible to support them in their reading progress and make a note of this in their Reading Record.
- Read at 3 will be happening every Friday in the Year 3 classrooms.
Dates to remember
