English

During English this week, we have continued our new book called ‘Ice Trap’. This week, we have concentrated on looking at non-chronological reports. We have started our reports on animals of Antarctica and we began the week by researching about penguins. After this, we wrote our first paragraph which made us sound like experts about Antarctica! We finished the week off by researching our next animal, which we will then write up next week.

Maths

This week in maths, we have continued to focus on our place value skills. However, we were looking at how to order numbers up to 1,000,000. We then moved on to rounding numbers to the nearest 10,100 and 1000. Finishing the week off by completing our first reasoning logistically investigation. Next week in maths we will be recapping adding and subtracting using the column method.

Thematic

This week, we started our first Thematic topic which is called ‘Across the Pond’. It is going to be all about North America focusing on Canada, America and Mexico in more depth. We started off by talking about what we already knew about these three countries and we located them on a map. We then concentrated on how over time people have seen the changes of North America. We compared maps from the 15^th century up to the 20^th century and saw all the differences. We finished the week by finding out about all the important people that ‘discovered’ North America and where they came from. Next week, we will continue to locate and name the countries in North America and where they are located by using atlases and online maps. We will also look at the UK and its countries. Using a variety of sources, we will discover the current land use patterns for North America and begin to make comments about why this may be. We will also compare this to the UK. Using maps and globes, we will discover why we have time zones. We will discover the difference in time zone between North America and the UK.

LOVE TO LEARN

This week’s task is to create a map of Antarctica. Please be as creative as you like. It could be 3D or 2D. Add labels and any information you can to the map.

Please also feel free to decorate your love to learn book. Remember to include your name and class and keep the plastic cover on.

Our Fact of the week this week has been 6 X 4 = 24 and our spelling rule has been spelling words with a silent b in them

Later this term, we will be celebrating Harvest. As part of this, we would like to invite families in to watch our Harvest Assembly. These will take place in the school hall on the following dates:

Tuesday 1st October: 9am Year R and 1 and 2.45pm Year 2 and 3

Wednesday 2nd October: 9am Year 4 and 5 and 2.45pm Year 6

Please enter the school via the main school office.

As part of the celebrations, we will also be collecting food that we will be donating to Thanet Food Bank. We will be taking donations between Wednesday 25th September and Monday 30th September. If you are able to donate, the food bank accepts any tinned, jarred or packet foods that are in date. As a celebration of the donations all children will be entered into a draw to win last years' celebration teddy bears, Kenneth and Susan.

Friday 25th October – Inset day – School closed to children
