One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 13/09/2024

English

The children have this week continued reading the text ‘Way Home’.  They have researched the topic ‘homelessness’ and then planned and created a non-chronological report.  Year 6 have focused on word classes this week (nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs) in their punctuation and grammar lessons. We have also spent time spelling words using the suffix –ing.

Maths

This week we have focused on rounding and how to add and subtract positive and negative numbers. We finished the week with maths word problems. Our times table of the week was 4x6.

Thematic curriculum

Our new topic this term is called Darwin’s Delights.  We started the week discussing a Big Question – Is change good? The children worked in small groups and presented their ideas to the class.  We also learnt about three important scientist explorers: Sylvia Earle, Tinisha Williams and Carl Linnaeus and spent time researching their work and then presented this to the class.

Love to Learn

We would like the children to write a speech that they will present to the year group next Friday (20th Sept).  Their speech can include why they should be considered for the following roles at Chilton: House Captain, Sports Captain, Sports Leader, Play Leader, Maths Ambassador, Reading Ambassador, Reading Buddy, Librarian or Peer Mediator.  We would like all children to complete this task. However, if they do not wish to apply for any of these Chilton roles, we would like them to give a speech telling us about them and their interests. Speeches will take place on Friday 20th September.

We would also like the children to bring in a cardboard box to use for a task next week (no cereal boxes please).
