One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News 28.6.2024

What a lovely week it has been in Year 3! We have loved being outside more in the sunshine.

English

In English this week we have continued to read ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane’. We finished our narratives, telling our own version of the story where Edward reunites with Abilene after falling overboard. In our writing, we focused on using verbs and adverbs to build suspense and continued to use a range of sentence structures to make our writing more engaging, such as compound and simple sentences. We were so impressed with the children’s confidence and creativity.

Next week we will be researching and writing non-chronological reports on Rainforests, using our thematic learning to help us.

Maths

In our maths lessons this week we have been learning about money. We began by looking at what spending is and different methods of payment. Then, we learnt about the difference between needs, wants and priorities, before considering how environmental factors can influence people’s spending.

Next week, we will be going back to telling the time in five-minute intervals on digital and analogue clocks. It would be amazing for children to practise some of this over the weekend.

Afternoon Learning

We have continued our learning on Rainforests this week by learning about the functions of each part of a plant. We began the week by learning about the stem of a plant, before moving on to leaves and learning about photosynthesis. Finally, we looked at the flower and its role in pollination and how seeds are spread for germination.

Next week we will be learning about deforestation and threats to the rainforest.

Home Learning

For Home Learning this week, we would love children to create a 3D model or piece of artwork of the rainforest. In this, they could show the four layers of the rainforest and the animals that live there and annotate with information they have learnt this term.

Alternatively, children could create a piece of artwork of a plant, annotating each part and explaining its function. This could be presented in any way.

Transition

To prepare the children for Year 4, their new teachers have kindly prepared short videos answering their questions about year 4.

Mr Oxley’s video can be found here for Team Royal (Password – ROYAL): https://vimeo.com/970644200?share=copy

Mrs Cousins' video can be found here for Team Indigo (Password – INDIGO): https://vimeo.com/970648669?share=copy
