One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! 28.06.24

We've had another super week! Read on to find out all about it...

Read, Write Inc.

We have been continuing practising spotting our sounds and then using fred talk to read words. We have also been continuing to use our fred fingers to help us write the words in our books, but not for the red words, because we all know you can't fred a red! We have been working hard on our writing and making sure all our letters are formed correctly. We have been really working on our big writes, keeping diaries at home, writing comic strips, writing postcards/cards, and making up stories at home can really support this. In your child’s reading folders, you will find some set 1,2 and 3 sounds and also some red words. Any practice with these would be wonderful!

Reading

*UPDATE*     Read, Write, Ink home readers will now be changed on Mondays not Fridays. Please continue to remind the children to put their reading folder in the coloured trays so that we can give them new books.

Reading at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child. Please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Reading folders - All children will bring home two books, one being a RWI home book. Children are expected to try and read this three times during the week to ensure they are building on their reading fluency. The RWI home books will be changed, by an adult, every Monday.

The other book (with the coloured sticker) should be changed independently by the child themselves - first thing in the morning is a great time to do this!

Please ensure that the reading folders are being placed in the reading-coloured trays, so we can read with your children and ensure books get changed. Thank you for your support with this!

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly.

Let's practice spotting special friends, fred talk, read the word. Your words of the week are....remember you can break up multisyllabic words into two chunks with your finger to help!

Maths

This week has been money sense week! We have learned what money is and where it comes from. Over the week we have been learning that people make different choices about how to save and spend their money. We also learned the difference between wants and needs and that money needs to be looked after. Towards the end of the week, we learned about how jobs help people to earn money, the different jobs that people do and about the strengths and the interests that someone might need to do different jobs.

Next week, we will focus on division.

Thematic

At the start of the week, we talked all about the weather in each season and how the day length varies. This knowledge was recapped from our previous learning in our Thunderbolts and Lightning topic. We spoke about what changes we have seen this year, times where we have had to wear our coats and wellies and times where we didn’t even need a jumper! We discussed ways in which we can observe these changes, noting them down, looking, using pictures etc. Today we used weather symbols, like we have used in the past and did an ‘on location’ observation using these. Look at our wonderful work.

Next, we recapped our learning on the different types of weather and which weather is associated with which season. We made notes and looked at our previous observations. We then had to use collage materials to show the differences by looking out of the same window, in each season. Take a look!

This morning, we drew around our shadows in playground! This was the beginning of our investigation to see whether the length of the day does change throughout the year.  We discussed if they will always stay the same at different times of the day and in different seasons. We revisited our silhouette of our shadows from this morning, and found that they had moved because of the sun!

Home learning

This week we would love for you to make a weather diary, recording the different weather and temperatures throughout the week. Which day was the hottest, which was the coolest? Is it hotter early in the mornings, at lunch or at night? Why do you think this is?

Last week, as individual classes, we worked together to come up with some questions for our new class teacher. We wanted to find out some more information about them and our new year group to help us get ready for our transition days. We were very excited to receive a video message back from our new teacher answering everything we wanted to know.
