What a fabulous week Year 3 have had! Here is what we have been up to.
English
In English this week, we have continued to read our class text ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ and the children have loved learning about the different lands that arrive above the tree. In our writing, we have been focusing on writing a setting description about the funfair. The children have practiced picking appropriate adjectives and using them in expanded noun phrases to describe things at the funfair. At the end of the week, we started introducing fronted adverbials into our work, which give extra detail about the place of a thing or how something is being done.
We also had World Book Day on Thursday where the children created some amazing work. Year 3’s focus text was ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ which we read in the morning. We painted the forest setting from the story and thought about all the different colours we needed. We then used our paintings to write a setting description of the forest from the book, thinking about our use of ambitious adjectives in our expanded noun phrases and starting to use our five senses to describe. The children created some incredible work and we were so proud of their accomplishments.
Next week, we will be continuing to look at setting descriptions with a focus of using the five senses and verbs to describe action.
Maths
This week, we have continued our learning on money. At the beginning of the week, we looked at subtracting amounts using a number line and then moved on to multiplying amounts. We spoke about why we may need to multiply amounts of money in today’s world and then we practiced using column multiplication to multiply amounts. We started off with small amounts such as 23 x 3 and then moved on to bigger amounts such as £1.29 x 3, for the bigger amounts we changed the amount to pence and then converted back once we had calculated the answer. The children worked so hard on this and we were amazed at their perseverance at such a mature concept.
Next week, we will be moving on to reading time in minutes, comparing time in hours, minutes and seconds and converting between hours and minutes.
Fact of the Week
Next week our fact of the week will be:
7 x 5 = 35
Thematic
Our thematic learning this week has seen us continuing to learn about the Romans. On Monday, we continued our Geography learning by labelling European countries and their capital cities on a map using an atlas. We later moved on to History, where we learnt some key dates to do with the Romans and made a timeline using these dates. We then learnt about why the Romans had an army and what a Roman soldier looked like.

Science Poster Competition
For British Science week, the theme this year is ‘Time’. You are invited to enter a competition to create a poster maybe showing how a certain type of technology has changed over time, or even the advancement of time-telling technology itself. Budding poster makers could also go futuristic, showing us how they think the world might look in years to come. You could perhaps look at nature – lifecycles, lifespans, evolution and hibernation – nature is full of timely topics. Your poster must only be A4 or A3 size. It will be scanned so it must be flat. There will be prizes in school and also our 5 best entries will be entered to a national competition. Here is what the judges will be looking for:
-
Creativity in approach – don’t be afraid to think outside the box and present your entry in a slightly different way.
-
Content – Clear, accurate and informative about a Science topic.
-
Effective communication – presented and communicated in an engaging way.
