Weekly News! 1.12.2023
Year 5 have had another wonderful, fun-filled week of learning. Here's what we've been up to:
English
In English this week, we have continued to read through 'The Jamie Drake Equation' and have been learning more about Buzz and the mysterious Hi'ive. In our writing, we have been started our own Jamie Drake inspired alien narratives. We planned before writing Chapter 1 where we described our setting, our main protagonist and introduced our good or bad alien character. We also created some artwork of the Solar System using the Fibonacci spiral. Next week, we will be continuing our narratives, writing Chapters 2 and 3.
Maths
In Maths this week, we have been studying Volume and Capacity as part of our measurement unit. We estimated and measured the capacity of different containers before moving on to volume and looking at the volume of different liquids and 3D shapes. Next week, we will be using the four operations to solve measurement problems.
Thematic curriculum
In our afternoons this week, we studied the Phases of the Moon and created a detailed diagram with annotations showing all the different phases of the Moon. We also continued our Art unit on vector drawings, planning a Christmas scene, making it out of card and then making it on the Google Drawings app. We also created some Wintery artwork focusing on the Aurora Borealis. Next week, we will complete our Stargazers unit and complete our Quiz before using the results of the quiz to recap on some knowledge from across the unit.
Love to learn
This week's Love to Learn task is related to the Fibonacci Spiral. Can you research where the Fibonacci Spiral can be seen in the real world and create a collage show its different uses? This collage can be presented in a creative way of your choosing.
