This week has seen our first ever assembly in front of our families and the start of our new Topic, On the Farm. The children are delving into their learning through our Power Play sessions. The children Plan what they would like to achieve and then Organise the resources they will need to complete the task, Work together in order to fill the full potential of their plan, Explore a range of areas and learn to be Resilient in what they are doing.

Phonics

This week in RWI we have continued to learn our set 1 sounds- O, C, K and U

 

        o-           All around the orange

        c-           Curl around the caterpillar

        K-           Down the kangaroos body, tail and leg

        u-            Down and under the umbrella, up to the top and down to the puddle

When practising these with your child, please ensure your child can recognise the sound when they see the letter and practise the handwriting of these letters. If your child is ready, they might also want to have a go at thinking of some words which begin with these sounds eg i,i, insect!

This week we also started word time with the sounds we learnt last week. This is when Fred the frog helps us to use words to hear words when they are only spoken in sounds. We then practise building those words using sound cards. This week, we have built the words cut, mud, kit and mop.

Maths

This week in Maths, we are going to be counting objects to 10 which are laid out in an irregular arrangement. The children started to counting objects remembering important rules to help them. They made sure to count carefully, not skipping out numbers, look closely and use their finger as a guide and check their answers.

The children have been working in small groups or with their partners to guide each other’s learning, showing great team work and team spirit by supporting and encouraging their peers.

Next week, the children will be exploring numerals using the programme ‘Numberblocks’.  

 

Thematic

Our new topic is ‘On the Farm’ where we will be exploring local farms and farmland. They will plant some seeds and learn about taking care of produce. They will look at the role animals play on the farm and how important it is to take care of living things. They will also look at farms in other countries. They will make food from farm-based produce and learn about changes of state.

We started the topic by listening carefully to noises of farm animals and seeing which ones we recognised, sharing what we already know about these animals and learning new facts. We read the story ‘what the lady bird heard’ by Julia Donaldson and created freeze frames of important events in the story.  The children sequence the events in the story and explored making their own maps, just like in the story!

Next week, the children will be looking at the painting ‘Wheatfield with Crows’ and discuss their likes and dislikes. Then, they will be learning how to introduce texture into their own art masterpieces.

Dates to remember:

PE will continue every Friday from now. PE kits are to be worn into school on that day.

Come Dine with Me

Now that all the children are settled into school life and in the full swing of the lunchtime routine, we would like to invite you in to come and have lunch with your child. This will take place on Friday 20th October. Team Cornflower will dine at 11.30 and Team Sapphire at 11.45. You will receive a message via MCAS with information about how to book. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Please ensure that children have a named water bottle which is already filled with water at the start of each day.
