Reminders

- Harvest Festival for Years 5 and 6 is on Wednesday 4th October from 14:30.  We would love to welcome families to celebrate with us!  Thank you to those who have been able to donate tins of food for the Harvest.  If you have any more, please do continue to bring them in.

- Our Maths Fact of the Week is 6 x 7 = 42.  Keep practising!  Next week's Fact of the Week is 6 x 8 = 48!

- Well done to Teams 1 and 7 who won the Sports Slam this time around!  We'll find an overall winner by next week!

For your Love to Learn homework, please log on to mymaths as your teacher has set a task for you involving subtraction.  You can do any working out on a piece of paper if this helps; remember to line up your columns like buttons on a shirt.  

In English this week, we continued our reading of Floodland.  The children are really enjoying getting their teeth into the text!  From what we read, we wrote setting descriptions of the cathedral, focussing on using prepositions and expanded noun phrases.  Our artwork based on the setting of Eels' Island was in the style of the illustrator:

    

    

In Maths, we developed our understanding of written methods for addition and subtraction, using Base 10 to support our learning.  From this, we rehearsed our fluency of addition and subtraction before solving problems.

   

Thematic lessons this week have had a scientific involvement: the children learned why scientists classify living things and looked at classification trees to sort them.  We challenged each other to group a range of animals by asking questions about their physical appearance.  We also asked how Charles Darwin was able to prove his theory of evolution through fossils and studied photos of the actual finches he brought back from the Galapagos.  These birds had many similarities but many differences.  Why?  There were terrific discussion points here!

   

   

Below is the list of words we would also like the children to learn based on our spelling lessons this week.  They are all superlatives (the highest degree of something; the most...).  There will be a test on these words next Friday.
