Weekly News! 29.9.23
What a fabulous week we have had finishing our first ever topic- Marvellous Me! Thank you so much for your ongoing support. We were blown away with the work in children’s sound books, and their beautiful outfits for our Dress to Express day. Please can we ask that you continue to share our reading area books at home with your child too.
Phonics
This week in RWI we have continued to learn our set 1 sounds- i, n, p and g.
-
Down the insects body, dot for his head
n- Down Nobby, and over his net
p- Down the plait, and over the pirate’s face
g- Around the girl’s face, down her hair, and give her a curl
When practising these with your child, please ensure your child can recognise the sound when they see the letter and also practise the handwriting of these letters. If your child is ready, they might also want to have a go at thinking of some words which begin with these sounds eg i,i, insect!
This week we also started word time with the sounds we learnt last week. This is when Fred the frog helps us to use words to hear words when they are only spoken in sounds. We then practise building those words using sound cards. This week, we have built the words am, at, mat, sat, mad and sad.
Maths
In maths this week, we have been practising counting a set of objects to 10. We started with lots of counting to 10 in different ways- stomping, clapping and nodding our heads. This was to make sure we counted in the correct order and didn’t miss any umbers out.
Then we began to count objects which were in a line or tower. We had to remember to use our pointy fingers to point to each object, and we needed to count slowly to make sure we didn’t miss any out. We practised saying how many there were at the end eg there are 7 blocks in my tower. This was to reinforce that the number we reached represented the total amount in the group.
Next week in maths, we are going to be counting objects to 10 which are laid out in an irregular arrangement.
Thematic
We started the week with an Autumn Day! We explored the new season we are entering through a tuff tray filled with autumnal treasures- acorns, conkers, leaves and pine cones. During the day, we learnt 3 facts-
-
The leaves change colour and fall off the trees,
-
The weather gets a bit cooler,
-
Animals start to collect nuts and seeds.
Children discussed the colours of autumn then explored these through a range of activities including a colour hunt and creating an autumnal tree painting. In the afternoon, we learnt an autumn song to which we made up actions. Each house practised a different part of the song, and we began to learn how to perform in front of others. We then came together to perform our songs to one another.
Please continue to discuss Autumn with your child and notice the changes happening around us.
In our last week of Marvellous Me, we focussed on ourselves and what we look like. We explored a range of self-portraits and learnt that these are when an artist creates a picture of themselves. We used mirrors to explore our features, then became artists and drew our very own self-portraits. We learnt about an artist called Yayoi Kusama, who uses bright colours and patterns in her work. After discussing our favourite colours, we explored primary colours and used these to create additional colours for our self-portrait backgrounds. Some of us painted in straight lines, wavy lines, abstract lines and circles. All were unique to us!
Next week we will begin our new topic, ‘On the Farm.’
