Guided Reading

In Guided Reading this week we have started looking at the book 'The Magic Finger' by Roald Dahl! When reading the book, we have been focusing on our expression. Especially when we have been reading what characters have been saying.

We have also looked at the reading skills of prediction, questioning and comprehension.

English

In English, we have been looking at writing narratives. We have been focusing this week on using present tense and using a range of conjunctions. The conjunctions we have been looking at are: and, but, because, so. 

We will be finishing the week by writing a part of the Magic Finger focusing on including these skills. Here is an example we wrote as a class...

'I am flying! I can't believe it, I just ?flew right out of the window. I feel ?a little confused because I have wings. I woke up this morning and had wings not arms. Why do I have wings?
Just below me is my brother Philip, my mum and my dad. They look like?they are having a great time although?I can hear my mum squealing! Below me I can see our beautiful garden but hold on, I can see 4 ducks too! They are going into my house!'

Maths

In Maths we have been looking at position and direction. We have been using the vocabulary: left, right, up, down, forwards and backwards. We have learnt this week position and direction isn't as simple as it looks! You have to ensure you always check which way an object is facing as that can change the directions instantly. 

Next week we will be looking at measure using the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Thematic Curriculum

In 'Ready, steady, sow and grow!' this week we have been looking at food sources and food chains! When looking at food sources we learnt that food is produced by either it being grown, reared, processed or caught. 

When looking at food chains, we learnt that the arrow shows the energy being passed on. We also learnt the vocabulary of producer, consumer, prey and predator.

Love to Learn

This week we have been looking at Vincent Van Gogh's famous artwork 'Sunflowers' for your Love to Learn this week, we would like you to recreate in any way that you wish Van Gogh's artwork 'Starry Night'. You could recreate this in any way that you like!

Warmer Weather

Please could you ensure that children have sunscreen on before coming to school and if they bring it with them, are confident in applying it thoroughly to themselves (we are not allowed to). Please could children also bring sun-hats and a water bottle to school during the warmer weather.

Sports Day (Copied from the sports day letter)

After a successful Viking Games at the end of last term, it is time to celebrate… SPORTS DAY! To commemorate the Women’s World Cup 2023, each class Team will represent a country that will be present in the competition; our Celebration of Sport will take place over two days on the Key Stage Two playground and field: Monday 3rd July – Reception and Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) from 9:15 Monday 10th July – Key Stage 2 (Years 3 - 6) from 9:15 Children will be encouraged to wear brightly coloured clothing (any colour) or their normal PE kit. They will wear this to school and keep it on all day. If the weather is forecast to be hot and sunny, please remember water bottles, hats and sun cream. After registration at normal times, children will walk up to the Key Stage Two playground / field. Feel free to cheer as the classes are announced! Children will stay with their classes and will take part in a carousel of activities, applying the skills they have learnt this year in their PE lessons to the competition for their House Teams. They will move through each numbered event in order. At the end of the carousel of activities, children will congregate in their classes in sections on the field. There will then be an opportunity for sprinting races for each year group for both boys and girls to find out the fastest runners in that year. Spectators will be welcome to assemble on the edge of the field to watch and cheer. This year, we would like to continue our Leavers’ Race where children in Year Six will participate in a fun Chilton Challenge, we like to think it’s a secret but they know what’s coming….. and will therefore need a change of clothing and a towel! We will then move over to the playground where awards will be given. This year, staff will be looking out for children who have demonstrated the School Games values (Self belief, Determination, Honesty, Team Work, Passion and Respect) and special awards will be given out to those children who have demonstrated them. The Sports Day Cup will also be awarded to the winning House after which the children will head off back to class. We anticipate the morning being finished by 12:00 at the latest.

Reception and Key Stage One Sports Day – Monday 3rd July @ 9:15 - 12:00 

Chilton transition days for Years 1 – 5 – Monday 17th July to Wednesday 19th July - The children will spend three days with their teachers for the new academic year.

Inflatable Fun Day – Thursday 20th July - We will have several inflatables on the playground for a reward for all of the children at the end of the school year.

Final Day of Term – Friday 21st July - We will be waving goodbye to our Year 6 children from 1:00 and the rest of the children will finish school at 2:00.
