One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 23rd June 2023

Year 5 have had another fantastic week of term, despite the warm weather. Here is what we have been up to:

Maths

In maths we have been learning how to calculate the perimeter of rectilinear shapes, including those with missing lengths. We then challenged ourselves to apply this learning to solve perimeters involving decimals. Next week, we will be looking at money and how to manage it sensibly in the real world. We will also be learning how to measure and convert between metric and imperial units.

English

This week we have began reading 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyes. We began by debating the question 'Is stealing always wrong?', before planning and writing our own persuasive pieces of writing on this. Within our writing, we have focussed on using persuasive sentence openers, modal verbs and causal co junctions.

Thematic

At the beginning of the week, we continued our History unit by learning about the reigns of William I and Edward I of England. We discussed who they were, the changes they made as King and how this reflected on citizens of England during this time. Next week we will be learning about the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.

We also had an art lesson this week, where we compared pictures of monarchs from the past to contemporary images of Elizabeth II, commenting on how colour was used to create mood and tone within each piece of art. Next week, we will begin to paint ourselves as monarchs.

Home Learning

For home learning this week, we would like the children to research a monarch of their choice that we have not studied in class and produce a piece of work about them, including who they were and the changes that they made to life in England during their reign. This could be presented in anyway, including a video, pic-collage, poster or powerpoint.
