It certainly has been a busy week full of fun learning and exiting activities for the children in reception. The children have delved into their learning on dinosaurs, making information sheets, creating their own habitats for the dinosaurs, which included a very fun sprinkler to keep them cool in the hot weather, labelling dinosaurs and reading some non-fiction and fiction books all about dinosaurs. Also, we hope you enjoyed our assembly on Thursday based on the story ‘The very hungry caterpillar’. We are so proud of the children’s achievements and their incredible confidence when saying their lines and singing the songs. A huge well done to all of the children and an enormous thank you to the parents who practiced the very catchy caterpillar song and the children’s lines.

Phonics and reading
We have been reading with all of the children and have noticed a wonderful fluency on the children’s reading. We are encouraging the children to say the sounds in the word in their head before saying the word aloud, the children know this as ‘Fred in your head’. During the group Read Write Inc Sessions, the children have been learning sounds that they have been writing in words along with stories appropriate for learning acquirements. Thank you for your continued support in reading with your children at home.
Maths
It has been all things subtraction this week in maths. The children started the week by introducing practical activities which the children showed great enthusiasm for. They used the numicon to press into playdoh to make buttons and pressed down the buttons made by the numicon to show the subtraction calculation, discovering how many buttons they had left to be the answer to the calculation. The children used dinosaurs to help them subtract, writing the calculation when completing the task. It was wonderful to see the children using their number bond knowledge to help them solve the calculations. Next week, the children will be learning addition.
Thematic
On Monday, reception enjoyed a whole day based on the season summer. The children discussed their understanding of the seasons and how they change, looking back at previous learning that has taken place throughput the year. We learnt about Honey Bees and read the story ‘the very greedy bee’, learning fun facts about bees and finishing our summer day by exploring a range of artistic resources to create our own honeycomb.
The children have also been learning about dinosaurs, discovering what palaeontologist’s jobs are and learning about Mary Anning, a famous fossil hunter. The children worked in groups to uncover the bones of a dinosaur and arrange them to find out what dinosaur they had discovered.
Net week, we are looking at different types of dinosaurs and their characteristics.
