One Childhood, One Chance

Year 4 Weekly News 5.5.23

Maths

In maths this week we have been learning about multiplication. We have learnt what factors are and found factors of given numbers e.g. factors of 24 are 1 and 24, 2 and 12, 3 and 8, 4 and 6. We also learnt how to multiply decimal numbers by a whole number e.g. 3.64 X 6, using the column method (short multiplication). Next week, we will be learning about fractions and decimals.

English

In English, we are learning how to write poetry. We have read the next story in our book 'Tales of Wisdom and Wonder' called 'Fish in the Forest' and written poetry based on this story. The children have learnt how to write poems with rhyming couplets (two lines of poetry that rhyme) and thought about the rhythm of their poem as well. We then finished the week by writing poems with an ABAB rhyming structure. Next week we will continue with poetry, writing tanka poems and learning to use figurative language in poetry.

Thematic curriculum

In our unit 'What's it made of?', the children have been learning about the Water Cycle and the part played by evaporation and condensation in this cycle. This week, we have set up a fair test experiment to find out if the rate of evaporation changes when we place one container of water in a hotter place and put another container in a cool place. We will be having a look at the progress of this experiment on Tuesday. Next week is art week and the children will be reproducing some famous watercolour paintings.
