One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 10th March

Well done Year 5 for another fantastic week at Chilton. Friday's Chilton Heroes assembly saw a clean sweep by Year 5 of the Kindness, Mooman, Paolo and Sports Personality awards. Amazing!

English

Year 5's writing this week has been simply phenomenal! We have been writing descriptions, focusing on expanded noun phrases, similes, metaphors and personification of Polyphemus, the sack of winds given to Odysseus by King Aeolus and of Circe, the enchantress. We ended the week by showing off our descriptive skills in a big write about King Midas. Next week, we will be beginning to plan our own Greek inspired myths.

Maths

This week, we have been looking at different time conversions and how to solve problems involving them. We then progressed onto solving problems based on different timetables. Next week, we will be studying geometry.

Afternoons

In our afternoons this week, our focus has been HISTORY. On Monday, we learnt all about the different mythological creatures that appeared in the myths of Ancient Greece. We also discussed why myths existed and how the Ancient Greeks used them to explain things that they didn't understand. On Tuesday, we studied the different Greek Gods and Goddesses and created top trump cards, justifying the scores we had given them for different ratings. On Wednesday, we researched Greek architecture and then redesigned the Chilton building in a Greek inspired architectural manner. Next week, we will be moving on to DT and designing and making our own CAM toys portraying a Greek myth.

Home learning

For the children's home learning this week, we would like them to go on a local walk and photograph any building that have been inspired by Greek architecture. Can you spot any columns? Any pediments? Any friezes? Can you find any examples of Ionic, Corinthian or Doric inspired order? You can print off your photos or email them to your class teacher.

Easter will soon be here and we will be holding our traditional Easter egg hunts and bonnet parade in school. Children in Reception, Year 1 and 2 are invited to make an Easter bonnet or hat if they would like to and bring it in to school on the final day of term (Friday 31st March). We will hold a parade in the hall for parents to come along to at 10:00 and prizes will be awarded for the most impressive creations.

For children in Years 3 – 6, they are also invited to enter the Key Stage Two bonnet / hat competition. This will be judged in year groups with prizes awarded.
