The children have been exploring important people who have been involved in moon landings and looking closely at timelines relent to our previous and current learning. We have enjoyed being creative and making our own rockets using gross and fine motor skills. In busy time, we flew to space in our own rocket and explored what it would be like to become an astronaut on a mission to the moon. 

Thank you to the parents who have been bringing in junk modelling items, these will be very handy for our learning in the coming week. We are starting to gather a lot of items bought in from home, we ;politely ask that anything from home stays at home as we do get very upset children if things are lost or broken. If there is something you would like to show the class relevant to learning, we are more than happy to keep it safe during the day to then use in our learning time.

Request

In term 5 our topic will be growing. As our entry point, we would like to show photos of the children from when they were a baby for us to play a game of guess who! Please could you send Mrs Cotton (Team Azure) and Mrs Walker (Team Peacock) a photo of your child as a baby by Friday 17th March. Many thanks in advance.

Reading with parents

We will be starting parent reading between the times of 3:00 and 3:10 every Monday from term 5.

Easter information

Easter will soon be here and we will be holding our traditional Easter egg hunts and bonnet parade in school. Children in Reception, Year 1 and 2 are invited to make an Easter bonnet or hat if they would like to and bring it in to school on the final day of term (Friday 31^st March). We will hold a parade in the hall for parents to come along to at 10:00 and prizes will be awarded for the most impressive creations. 

Phonics

Thank you for all the efforts you make to read to the children at home. We know it can be a very hard to fit in tasks during your busy home lives, but we can see a tremendous difference when the children practice their reading at home. We have been focussing on ‘red words’ and the children are familiar with these when reading simple sentences. Red words are words you cannot sound out using phonics, we have to remember them as red words, which the children know and will often say ‘you can’t Fred a red’. Red words the children are familiar with are: the, I, her, said, my, of, no and she.

Maths

This week, the children have been learning about the composition of numbers 8, 9 and 10. They have been using the numicon to find number bonds and have been writing their answers in ‘part, part, whole’ diagrams. Towards the end of the week, the children have been doing simple additions using Tens frames.

Next week, we will be subtracting numbers using a range of mathematical recourses. The children have been doing very well with writing numbers to 10, which has really helped when writing down their calculations in Maths.

Topic

This week’s topic has been out of this world! The children have been learning about Neil Armstrong, which was perfectly started by reading the story ‘The darkest dark’. We had to get ready for a mission into space and explored what the astronauts may have seen when they landed, whilst they were in their rockets and how it would have felt to me a million miles a away from their homes. We discussed that Neil Armstrong went to the moon in 1969 which was a long time before they were born and talked about our class timeline. The children discussed past and present events that we have explored over the school year, such as Nelson Mandela and Guy Fawkes.

Next week in Topic, the children will be looking at what makes a good rocket. They will be exploring mixed media to create their own rocket and testing them out.
