World Book Day

WOW! Thank you so much for the effort put into the children’s first World Book Day at Chilton. The children looked fantastic in their costumes, and spoke confidently about their characters and their favourite books. It is such a lovely way to share stories together and develop our love of reading.

Request

In term 5 our topic will be growing. As our entry point, we would like to show photos of the children from when they were a baby for us to play a game of guess who! Please could you send Mrs Cotton (Team Azure) and Mrs Walker (Team Peacock) a photo of your child as a baby by Friday 17^th March. Many thanks in advance.

Phonics

We continue to work in our new groups for term 4. If you have any questions about what your child is learning specifically in their group and how you can support at home, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

Most groups will be working on identifying special friends in words when reading. This can be tricky as special friends have 2 or more letters. When we practise, we underline special friends and dot single sounds to make them easier to spot in words. We also practise speed sounds (including special friends) which will link to reading we will be doing in the lesson.

We also focus on recognising tricky words to help when we come across them whilst reading. We call these red words- ‘You can’t Fred a red!’ We discuss the words and which part is being tricky, we then put this part into a circle so we know we can’t Fred talk it.

Maths

This week we have been learning about the composition of numbers 6,7 and 8. We learnt that the number of the day was our whole and we could Hulk smash our number into 2 parts. We explored this in a range of ways over the week, including using dominoes to paint the 2 parts, building numicon towers, breaking cube towers into 2 parts and flying aliens between planets. We then used part whole models to record what we had learnt.

Next week, we will be exploring the composition of 9 and 10 and then using jottings to record addition problems.

Topic

This week, our space topic has continued. Children have been learning the names of the planets in our solar system and their order from the sun. We then wrote facts about our solar system to show what we have learnt eg The Sun is a star, Jupiter is the biggest planet, Venus is the hottest planet etc.

Children enjoyed listening to the song The Planets by Gustav Holst. They discussed how the different planets made them feel or what it made them think of. We explored different movements to the music through drawing, dancing and creating our own music to mirror the feeling of the songs.

Next week we will be exploring the past and what that means to us. Children will be learning about the moon landing and Neil Armstrong.
