One Childhood, One Chance

Year 4 Weekly News

Reminders:

PE is on a Wednesday

Sports Project is on a Thursday

The children are expected to read at least four times a week and bring their reading records in every day.

Love to Learn:

This week we would like the children to review their understanding of the Silk Road and research an item which was traded between countries. They could draw a picture and then write some facts about why this item was traded.

Times Tables

We are noticing that the children need some extra support to learn their times tables. If you are able to assist your child at home then for the next couple of weeks we are focusing on the three times tables. By the end of Year 4, the children are required to know all of their times tables up to 12x12.

This Week

In Maths this week the children have been reviewing their understanding of addition. They started the week by using manipulatives and then progressed on to using the formal column method.

In English, the children wrote a newspaper report based on a chapter in our class text, ‘The Iron Man’. The children used a variety of skills including structuring their ideas, using time conjunctions and using inverted commas for quotations.

In Topic, the children explored the Silk Road. They identified where in the world it crossed and through what countries. In addition, they learnt about the items which were traded. Then they focused on the physical conditions of this area and then focused on important explorers who travelled this route.

Next Week

In maths next week the children will learn to multiply. They will start by multiplying numbers by ten. After, they will multiply two digits by 1 digit then 3 digits by 1 digit. We will encourage the children to showcase the methods they have been taught previously such as the grid method and the use of manipulatives. The children will be learning how to use the short column method.

In English next week the children will be writing recounts in the form of letters. Some of the skills they will be encouraged to use are: emotive language, a range of sentence openers and a range of punctuation.

In Topic, the children will be learning about electricity and electrical inventions. It will be a very practical week where the children will make circuits and explore the inside of a torch.
