Chilton Primary School

One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News! w/b 5.9.22

Wow! What a first week in Year 1 it has been! The children have coped so well with their new routines and have settled into year 1 life brilliantly. We could not be prouder.

PSHE

This week we have been focussing on PSHE.

We started the week by reading the story ‘Rufus goes to school’ this made us think about our behaviours in school, our school rules and the Chilton Way. We spoke about our behaviour cards, the point system and discussed when Rufus, in the story, would receive any behaviour cards or housepoints. We then discussed our three school rules and created pictures to show these. Take a look at our work…

We then learnt what the Zones of Regulation are and how to use them throughout the day. To get us use to using these, we created our own feelings fingerprints. We used the four colours to create fingerprints and drew faces on each one to represent the feelings.

We then took part in some team building activities! We worked together as a class, in groups and in pairs and built on our relationships.

On Tuesday, we started the day learning about our four important school values; Respect, Courage, Kindness and Equality.

We read the story, ‘What does it mean to be kind’ and role-played many acts of kindness, we did some wonderful independent writing and drew pictures to match our acts of kindness. We then learnt about courage and how we can show this in trying something new! In the afternoon we created our own worry warriors! Worry warriors eat our worries and create courage connections! Courage connections are made, when we share our worries and talk about our problems. We think about how we can solve or overcome our worries, which creates courage connections! Take a look at some of our creations!

Focussing on respect and equality, we discussed what these values mean and the importance of showing these values every day. We played the mirror game and compared our faces with our friends. We discussed what makes us the same and what makes us different. We spoke about if we wear glasses, why we do not all have the same hair colour and how the colour of our skin differs. We discussed that it’s ok to all be different and unique and that’s what makes us special! We then role-played how we can show respect and kindness, we came up with some wonderful ideas.

We ended our PSHE topic by discussing the difference between good and bad manners. We role played a range of good manners and spoke about the importance of using them. We then had to sort good and bad manners and talk to our table groups about why they were good or bad.

Read, Write Inc

This week we also started Read, Write Inc. We met our new RWI teachers and groups, who were incredibly impressed with our phonic knowledge! Well done Year 1!

Maths

This week in maths we used different objects to help us count independently. We used beans (Yuk!), blueberries, cubes, bears and cars! We then moved our learning on by trying to find one more and one less than a number. We worked so hard on our first ever maths lessons in year 1.

Next week:

Next week we will be continuing to work hard on our sounds, reading and writing in our Read, Write Inc lessons. In Maths, we will be looking at comparing numbers and quantities, matching numbers with their quantities, identifying numbers on a number line and representing, reading and writing numbers to 20. We will also be starting our brand-new topic… ‘When I grow up…’ What a busy week we have coming up!

Love to Learn:

All children should have been sent home with a love to learn book this week. Every week children will be set a task or challenge to complete at home. These will be due in every Wednesday and given back to take home on Fridays.

All children can decorate the front of these books however they wish!

This week we would love for you to complete 3 random acts of kindness and record these in their love to learn books. You can record these by taking photos, drawing pictures or writing what acts of kindness you completed.

Have fun!
