One Childhood, One Chance

Friday 6th May

Another wonderful week in Reception! We have had a lot of excitement this week as we have been able to observe our class caterpillars become chrysalides. We are so excited to see them emerge from their chrysalis as butterflies!

In Busy Time yesterday, the children wanted to wash the bikes, so we set up a car wash. There are some great pictures at the bottom of this blog showing the great work that they did at the carwash!

Reading sessions

Many thanks to the adults who have been able to come along to the Thursday reading sessions. These run each Thursday from 3:00-3:10. You are welcome to come in to the classroom to read, or take a book in the garden and read with your child. If you are unable to make it, please do not worry!

Phonics:

Most groups have started to learn Set 2 sounds (these are listed below). When reading words, we always check for a special friend first of all, then we Fred talk, then we say the word. The set 2 sounds can be quite tricky to spot in words, so you may want to support with spotting these when you are reading with your child at home.

Set 2 sounds:

ay (play)

ee (feet)

igh (night)

ow (snow)

oo (zoom)

oo (look)

ar (car)

or (fork)

air (fair)

ir (girl)

ou (shout)

oy (boy)

Maths:

This week, we have been learning to quickly recall number bonds for numbers to 5 (e.g. knowing that 5 can be made with a 2 and 3 and knowing that 4 can be made by adding 3 and 1). The children have also been learning to automatically recall subtraction facts for numbers to 5 (e.g. 5 take away 3 equals 2 and 4 take away 2 equals 2).

Next week, we will be learning that shapes can have other shapes inside them (e.g. a square can have 2 triangles inside it). We will also be making repeated patterns going around the outside of a circle and a square.

Topic:

This week, we have been learning about the lifecycle of a frog. We have had such wonderful a wonderful learning journey this week and have loved reading The Tadpole’s Promise, which had a very surprising ending – ask your child if they can remember what happened in the story!

Next week, we will be reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We will be discussing the lifecycle of a butterfly. We will also look at the foods which the caterpillar ate and will discuss healthy and unhealthy foods, as well as what else helps to make a healthy lifestyle. As part of this learning, the children will have the opportunity to taste some of the foods from the story if they wish to (e.g. watermelon, plums, salami).

Little Stars Sheets

It is always lovely to receive WOW moments which the children have completed/achieved at home. If your child does something for the first time or does something really well at home, please write it on a little stars sheet (ask your child’s teacher if you need more) and pass on to us so we can add it to their learning journeys.

Dates:

  • Advanced warning - our school summer fair will be Friday 24th June from 3.15-5.15.
  • Friday 27th May will be the Be Here, Be You, Belong parade – see coming weeks for more information.

Many thanks for all of your support, from all of the EYFS Team!
