Welcome back Year 2!

We hope you all had a fabulous Easter break.

This week we have been learning...

Guided Reading

In Guided Reading this week we started to look at a brand new book… Traction Man! This book has been extremely popular already. We started the week with making predictions by looking at clues on the front cover, we have asked characters some interesting questions and discussed what we thought the answers might be. We have also been busy clarifying words we were unsure of, by looking at the illustrations to help us and answered questions by finding evidence in the book.

English

In English this week we have recapped our learning on adjectives. In house groups, we thought of lots of adventurous adjectives to describe the main characters and moved our learning on by putting these into expanded noun phrases. We were then told that the naughty, evil pillows (From the text) mixed up a range of adjectives and verbs! Just like Traction Man, we were given a mission to sort the words into verbs and adjectives, which tested our understanding on the differences between them. After a busy start to the week, we started looking at adverbs and used them to describe verbs within the story. To end the week we told the story as Traction Man himself and used the skills we have been learning about this week. We have been so busy! We wish we owned some jet-powered shoes just like Traction Man!

Maths

In Maths this week we have been looking at addition and subtraction! We recapped our learning on column addition and subtraction. We also challenged ourselves by answering some tricky challenge questions that tried to trick us! We all remembered the importance of adding or subtracting the ones column first and looking carefully at the symbol.

Good to Be Me

This Term in week 1 and 6 we will be celebrating ourselves and why it’s good to be us! We started our learning by reading the book ‘Meet the Genies.’ This positive and colourful story opens the door to Joe, Ted and their family, as they welcome us up to the Treehouse in their back garden. There we were introduced to their friends, who make up the Genies Gang, and who meet each day to laugh and play together.

Each of the Genies Gang have something a little bit different about them, and through the strength of their friendship everyone always enjoys themselves equally. This book helped us celebrate difference and gain a deeper understanding of some of the Genies gang differences such as down syndrome, sickle cell anemia and brittle bone disorder.

We joined the Genie’s gang by completing a membership form, which included questions about eye colour and favourite foods. We discussed the differences on this form with our learning partners. We then made some beautiful kindness baskets, everybody had to write compliments about one another and fill up each other’s baskets. This activity brought many, many smiles and made us feel incredibly good about ourselves and lucky to have so many wonderful friends. Towards the end of the week we had a game of ‘Find somebody who…’ which involved finding our friends in the class who help us put smiles on our faces, who makes us laugh, is always polite and who makes us feel happy.

We then read ‘Heroes Day’ where we joined the Genies and family again after school for some more Treehouse fun.  It was Heroes Day at school for the Genies and everyone had to work out who they want to dress as and why.  Cee-Cee seemed quite sad so her friends jumped in to make her feel better. We discussed our home heroes, shared photos of them and discussed why they were our home heroes. We then made red wrist bands to celebrate Cece from the story. We loved reading and learning with these books!

Blue Peter Green Badge - become a Blue Peter Climate Hero.

After our latest topic, ‘Ready, Steady, Sow and Grow’ all of us gained a real passion for taking care of our environment and the beautiful creatures in it. As a year group we will be following the steps below to earn ourselves a Blue Peter Green Badge and hopefully earn ourselves a Blue Peter Climate Heroes Certificate. Here are the three steps and pledges we will be taking for two weeks (and hopefully more)…

1. Power

Switch half an hour of screen time for 30 minutes of outdoor time.

2. Plastic

Sort the rubbish recycling at home and school carefully.

3. Plants

Save water by turning off the taps when you brush your teeth. Using less water gives plants and trees more to drink.

We would love for you to email in pictures of you taking these pledges at home, we will need to send evidence to Blue Peter! The more evidence we have for completing these pledges the more likely we will be in completing this wonderful challenge! You can also complete some artwork of your choice to show how much you care about nature, the environment and your planet.

As well as everyone completing their three pledges, as a group we had to choose one Supersized Pledge for two weeks! We chose…

Plastic - Swap disposable plastic bottles for reusable water bottles. We will be encouraging all children to bring in a reusable water bottle instead of disposable ones.

After the two weeks we will be applying for our badge and certificate. Let’s do this Year 2!!

• PE is on a Monday. Please come into school in your PE kit.
• Please remember to tie hair back.
• Please remember to bring in a water bottle into school.  We have cups and water available but if we go on the field and take water bottles the cups tend to fall over!
