Wednesday 24th June
Good morning Team Teal and Team Periwinkle. It is Wednesday already – halfway through the week already!
Here’s today’s learning:
RWI
The RWI videos will be available, but will take a slightly different form. All videos will be available from 9:30 am so you can choose from set 2 or set 3, whichever you feel your child needs to focus on. There will be reading opportunities for longer words and red words included in each session. Use the link below to find the lessons you need under the different categories.
You tube: Read, Write inc phonics video
If you would rather not use the videos, teach the lesson as follows:
1. Find the sound ‘oi’ on your sound card and say it lots of times, make sure you are looking at the sound to ensure you remember what it looks like, also say ‘oi, spoil the boy!’ Explain that these are special friends (two letters that make one sound) When you're finished, point to some other sounds (about 10).
2. Write down the following words for your child to read (boil, foil, spoil, soil, coin). Remember they need to find the special/chatty friends, Fred talk (say the sounds) and then read the word.
3. Now write down some words for your child to read as a recap of previous sounds learnt (flake, cheap, mile, home, cute). This time encourage your child to say the sounds in their head and then say the word aloud.
4. Ask your child to show you their alien faces! Write down the words: shoip, floig, moith. Ask your child to spot the special/chatty friends, Fred talk and then read the word.
5. Now it's time for spellings! One at a time say the following words to your read (boil, foil, spoil, soil, coin). Repeat the word back to each other then ask them to pinch the sounds. When they know how many sounds in the word they can write it down. Help your child to tick or fix (correct) their work.
English
Yesterday, you started to learn about verbs (a verb is a ‘doing word’ e.g. running, cooking, swimming). Today, we will continue to learn about verbs. Click on the link below and complete activity 3 (write down the verbs as you hear them in the video).
For an extra challenge, you could write some sentences with some verbs in.
Maths
To warm our maths brains up this morning, we will practise our counting in 5s. Click on this link for a song to help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EemjeA2Djjw
Today, we will be moving on to subtracting. Discuss the different vocabulary which means the same as subtracting (subtract, take away, minus). Children will need to use their number lines if they are going to subtract with numbers to 20 and use their hundred square if they are confident with numbers to 100.
They will need to put their finger on the starting number and then count backwards the correct number of jumps. This is a practical lesson where they are practising these skills. You could have a go at the following questions or make up your own:
Subtracting on number line Numbers to 10 |
Subtracting on a number line Numbers to 20 |
Subtracting on a hundred square Numbers to 50 |
Subtracting on a hundred square Numbers to 100 |
9 – 3 = 7 – 2 = 6 – 4 = 10 – 3 = 9 – 2 = 8 – 4 = 10 – 5 = 6 – 5 = |
14 – 3 = 15 – 6 = 19 – 3 = 14 – 7 = 19 – 7 = 20 – 4 = 12 - 9 = 15 – 6 = |
24 – 3 = 34 – 2 = 49 – 4 = 29 – 5 = 32 – 4 = 33 – 7= 43 – 6 = 48 – 10 = |
67 – 8 = 72 – 5 = 63 – 7 = 82 – 6 = 91 – 5 = 100 – 11 = 61 – 7 = 83 – 10 = |
Topic – PSHE
Discuss what peers are and who their peers are. Look at the peer pressure PPT and go through the slides. (You may need to word the scenarios in different ways so that your child can understand each scenario). Discuss whether each scenario is positive peer pressure or negative peer pressure and WHY. Share some other scenarios (e.g. a friends tells you to take something from the teacher’s desk etc). Discuss any times that children may have found themselves in those situations and what they did. Did they do what they told them to do? Did they resist? What did they say each time? What could they say to resist peer pressure?
ACTIVITY 1: With your child, do some role play. 1 person try to convince the other to do something wrong, the other person to use the ideas spoken about before to say no.
Ask your child: How do you feel when you are at home and school? See if they say ‘safe’. What does it mean to feel ‘safe’? Sometimes we may not feel safe and we may feel worried. Discuss times when you have felt unsafe. Then ask the children. What could we do if we feel unsafe or worried? Who would you ask for help? What sort of words might you use? Remind them of the importance of keeping trying until they are heard.
ACTIVITY 2: Children to draw pictures of times they have felt safe and times they have felt unsafe.

#ChiltonHeroes,
The pictures and videos that you are sending in are fabulous, thank you.
This week’s challenges have a twist. The Olympics would have been happening this year in Tokyo but, due to the current circumstances, they have been postponed to next year. All challenges from now on will be Olympic events.
You will be an Olympian! Choose your country and participate in the event using your imagination! I cannot wait for these pictures and videos.
