English

If the videos do not work for you then the lesson is detailed below:

1,   Find the sound ‘er’ on your sound card and say it lots of times, make sure you are looking at the sound to ensure you remember what it looks like, also say ‘er- better letter.’ This is the same as yesterday’s sound ‘ur- nurse with a purse’ but spelt with a different grapheme. WARNING- when this sound is at the end of words, because of our accents and how we pronounce some words, the ‘er’ sound can be pronounced as an ‘u’. Explain that words do not tend to end with an ‘u’, you may need to use your posh voices today!

When you're finished, point to some other sounds too (about 10).

2.    Write down the following words for your child to read (better, corner, never, over, boxer). Remember they need to find the special friends, Fred talk (say the sounds) and then read the word.

3.    Now write down some words for your child to read as a recap of previous sounds learnt (spook, goat, inspire, glee, cart). This time encourage your child to say the sounds in their head and then say the word aloud.

4.    Ask your child to show you their alien faces! Write down the words spinker, floner, glober. Ask your child to spot the special friends, Fred talk and then read the word.

5.    Now it's time for spellings! One at a time say the following words to your read (better, corner, never, over, boxer). Repeat the word back to each other then ask them to pinch the sounds. When they know how many sounds in the word they can write it down. Help your child to tick or fix (correct) their work. 

Today attached to the blog you will find an e-book from Twinkl- ‘Fee! Fi! Fo! Fum! as a PDF. If you would rather read the actual ebook please download it from the Twinkl website.  Your child may need some support to read the story, enjoy the story together. This story is great to develop children’s comprehension skills- what do they think is going to happen next based on the story so far or based on what they know about different fairy tales? How might the characters be feeling based on their actions? This story is also really great to discuss the meanings of words, can your child think of an alternative? For example, what is another word for enormous or waded?

After sharing the book together, it is time for a writing activity. This book would lend itself well to a diary entry from one of the characters, maybe the wolf describing what a terrible day he has had. Another idea could be to create a comic strip where your child can draw pictures of the characters with speech bubbles to convey what is happening. Your child might like to draw a picture of a character then describe them (physically or their characteristics).

Whichever task they choose, model how you would do it so they know where to start. Break it down into small chunks so they don’t have too much to remember. For example if I chose to write a diary entry, I would think about which character I wanted to write about first (Wolfie) and then list the things that had happened to them in the story. I would then think of my first sentence, model how you would build your ideas into a short sentence eg This morning, I woke up with a cunning plan. Repeat your sentence together so you both remember what you want to write. Then show your child how to write this down, remembering to show that you have thought about your capital letter, finger spaces, sounds and full stop. Now it is their turn to put their idea into a sentence and put it down onto paper and so on.

Maths

As a warm up today, we will be focusing on one less. Click on the link below, select subtraction and then choose between Up to 10 – one less, Up to 20 – one less or Up to 100 – one less (depending on what your child feels confident with).

Today in maths, we will be learning about subtraction.

Start by asking your child to repeat the following words: subtract, take away, minus, less, leave, difference, (and then explain that these are all words that mean subtracting). Draw a - sign and discuss how this is the subtract sign. Ask children to make this sign using their arms.

Practically show them that subtracting means taking the smaller group of objects from the larger group of objects. Think of a story to demonstrate subtraction, for example- Mrs Walker had 6 biscuits. She ate 5 biscuits. How many biscuits does she have left? Use objects (biscuits, pasta, counters, pens etc) to show 6 – 5.

The next step is to give them a calculation and for them to solve it using the number line, hundred square or mentally. Depending on your child’s confidence, listed below are the different options.

1. Keep it practical. Give them numbers such as 10 - 3 = and ask them to count out 10 objects- the first (largest) number. They then have to take away 3 (the second/ smaller number) from the original 10. Count how many are left.
2. Use the number line. Give children a calculation e.g. 15 – 4 = . Children to put their finger on the 15 and move their finger backwards 4 jumps.
3. Use the hundred square. Give calculations where the number you are taking away is small for example 59 – 8. As a challenge you could take away a higher ones digit so they have to go down to a different ten eg 22 – 5.
4. Counting back in the heads. Give calculations such as 29 - 6 =. Children to put 29 in their heads and use their fingers to count back 6 jumps. They could check their answers using the hundred square.

Topic

We are super lucky to have a new writing competition launched this week. You will find attached further information you will need, regarding how to enter. Not only will you be able to listen to an author reading his hilarious poems, you will be doing so before they are even released. There will be a new poem to enjoy every day… this is Tuesday’s poem.
