Good morning year 1 and welcome to your first full week back of home learning after the Easter break! We hope you had a lovely weekend J
It has been lovely to get emails from some of you showing what you have been doing at home (learning and also other activities), so please do keep sending them through to us!
From today, there will be online videos for RWI sessions. Attached at the bottom of this page are the timings and what sounds will be covered on each day. Alternatively, you can follow the lesson structure just below here for a RWI session.
English
The sound today is ‘ar’ – start the car.
1. Find the sound on your sound card and say it lots of times, make sure you are looking at the sound to ensure you remember what it looks like. When you're finished, point to some other sounds too (about 10).
2. You could also play a game to practise sound recall using the following link (click on Phase 3 to find the ‘ar’ sound, but feel free to play with any sounds that the children feel confident with).
https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/member-only/PicnicOnPluto.html
3. Write down the following words for your child to read (car, far, start, dart, scar, hard). Remember they need to find the special friends, fred talk (say the sounds) and then read the word.
4. Now write down some words for your child to read as a recap of previous sounds learnt (toy, spoil, look, zoom, hook). This time encourage your child to say the sounds in their head and then say the word aloud.
5. Ask your child to show you their alien faces! Write down the words sharg, tarm, flarn, charp. Ask your child to spot the special friends, Fred talk and then read the word.
6. Now it's time for spellings! One at a time say the following words to your child (car, far, start, dart, scar, hard). Repeat the word back to each other then ask them to pinch the sounds. When they know how many sounds they can write it down (for example car has 2 sounds c - ar). Help your child to tick or fix (correct) their work.
It is also important for children to practise reading red words which cannot be Fred talked. These words need to be learnt by sight but can be done so through a variety of fun games. You could write some of the red words down on pieces of paper and play snap, bingo, put them around the room/ garden for children to run to when called out or children could practise writing them out in chalk, paint, sand etc. Knowing these red words will help children become speedier and more confident when reading.
You can now share a book together. Use the link below to find the book ‘Horses’ (feel free to select a different book to read if your child wishes to read another).
Maths
To warm up our maths brains we are going to start by counting in 10s up to 100. You could take it in turns with another family member. Then practise counting in 5s to 50 and then to 2s up to 20.
This week we will be looking at properties of shapes. Today we are going to look at 2D shapes. These are flat shapes. Look at the teaching pages at the bottom of the page. First, go through the different words that they will be using this week. Say the words in different voices (whispering, singing, shouting etc). Then look at the shapes, talk about the names and start to look at the properties (how many sides and corners each shape has). Then ask your child questions such as which shape has 4 sides etc. Finally, try the activity sheet where you need to name and describe the 2D shapes.
Topic
We are going to continue with the 'Good to be me!' topic at the start of this week. This is a great topic to celebrate each and every child for their own awesomeness! It can be tough for some children to see their place in the world or value what they have to offer.
Today we would like all of the family to get involved! We would like each family member to draw around their hands (children may need a little help with this!) Then in each finger we would like you to write something which you are good at. This does not have to be academic things but can be things like riding a bike, being kind, doing puzzles etc. You can decorate each hand too! Then cut each hand out and arrange them as a collage. We would love to see this artwork, so please do send us some pictures!
PE
Monday is PE day for Year 1. You could do a Joe Wickes workout or some Cosmic Kids Yoga (both available on YouTube) or you could make an obstacle course in the garden for all of the family to get involved! You could time each family member and see who can make it around the course in the quickest time. Try again – can you beat your own time?
Helping at Home!
Your daily helping at home challenge is back! Today, we would like you to help with the hoovering or sweeping the floors! Send us some pictures of you helping at home J
Take care and stay safe,
Miss Wright, Miss Cheshire and Mrs Walker x
