What a fabulous first week back we have had! We hope that you all had a wonderful Easter holiday. It has been great being back at school with the children who have all made a fabulous return to Chilton. The children may come home excited that we have new additions in the classrooms...we do! We have some caterpillars in the classrooms which we will be observing over the next few weeks as they change into butterflies! This links with our Growth learning this term.

Phonics

We have been continuing our Read, Write, Inc lessons in small groups. Each group will focus on the sounds and the skills suited to them. To support at home, you can continue to use the pink sounds books (which can now be kept at home) to make sure that they can speedily recall the sounds. Children can also use the space on the pages to practise writing the sounds. Please listen to your child read regularly at home. Books are changed on a Tuesday and a Friday in school. If your child has a lilac book (no words), please encourage your child to say what they can see on the page, can they make up their own story to match the pictures?

You will find a sticker in your child’s reading record with what they are working on in their RWI sessions so that you can support with this skill at home. If you need any further clarification, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

The children will also be developing their writing this term. The children write in each RWI lesson and also do a writing task linked to our thematic lessons each week.

Maths

This week we have been learning to share objects equally and fairly. We have been using practical resources to do this and the children have done so well with this learning. For example, they have shared 6 cakes fairly between 2 people. This is a fun activity to do at home, just make sure that each person gets the same amount so that it is fair!

The children have also been learning about odd and even numbers this week. We learned that even numbers can be grouped up in pairs/with a friend and that odd numbers can not. We started off by using the Numicon tiles to show this and then learned:

0, 2, 4, 6, 8…even numbers they are great!

1, 3, 5, 7, 9…odd numbers they are fine!

Next week in maths we will be looking at doubling. We will use lots of practical resources to do this, as well as making spots on ladybirds, making dominoes etc to represent doubles.

Over this term, our facts of the week will look at doubles. This week we have learned 1+1=2 (we are now using the words add and equals as the children have been taught this). Next week our fact of the week will be 2+2=4.

Thematic Curriculum

This week we started our new thematic learning all about Growth! This week we played Guess Who with the photos you sent in (many thanks for these wonderful pictures!) The children were great at trying to guess who was in the picture – we tricked them with pictures of the adults too! We learned about using the words older and younger to compare the ages of people in our family. 

Next week we will be reading The Growing Story and look at the changes which happen as we grow. We will talk about the things that we can do now but couldn’t do as a baby, as well as what we cannot yet do.

This week we also had a day where we learned about spring. We spoke about what happens in spring and compared it to the other seasons we have already learned about this year. The children did an observational drawing of some flowers and performed a poem about spring.

 

Be Here, Be You, Belong

One afternoon a week this term, we will be focusing on our PSHE learning. This week we have explored the book Something Else. We explored Something Else’s emotions throughout the story and then played a games where children stand on different sides of the classroom depending on certain characteristics/likes/beliefs. We discussed how we are all individual but come together as a team.

Reminders

• PE kits need to be worn in to school each Friday please.

• Please ensure that children have a named water bottle which is already filled with water at the start of each day.

• All clothing to be named please!

• Please complete the WOW moment sheets regularly so that we can add these to the children’s learning journey books.
