The learning this week has been out of this world! The children have continued their learning on all things space, discovering key events in the past and incorporating their learning within their power play. The children, as always, have been continuously extending their ideas and challenging themselves during power play, in which we are encouraging them to discover new areas in which they wouldn’t usually be drawn to.  

Read Write Inc

We are proud of the children’s dedication to their reading and writing. They have shown us incredible independence and are applying techniques taught in their Read Write Inc sessions when writing independently. We have been focussing on ‘red words’ and ask that the children practice recalling these at home. We have selected a few for you to revise below:

Maths

This week in Maths, we have been learning about number stories. The children have been speaking in sentences to explain what they see in pictures and incorporating their mathematical skills. This led us onto using mathematical language such as add and equals when discussing calculations. Next week we will be exploring the similarities and differences between 2D shapes.

 

Thematic-space!

 This week, we have been reading the story ‘The Darkest dark’ which is about a little boy who is afraid of the dark. He wants to be an astronaut and realises, whilst watching the first ever Moon landing, that to be an astronaut you are surrounded by dark in space and so it isn’t as scary after all. The children were amazed to find out that the story was based on a real-life astronaut, Chris Hadfield. We then discovered that he was watching the first ever astronaut to land on the moon, Neil Armstrong.

Next week, we will be having a science themed day on Monday discussing how the moon may appear to change over time and why. We will be designing our rockets and looking at how gravity effects them.

Science Day Poster Competition

On Monday 11th March, we will be taking part in British Science Week here at Chilton. For British Science week, the theme this year is ‘Time’. You are invited to enter a competition to create a poster maybe showing how a certain type of technology has changed over time, or even the advancement of time-telling technology itself. Budding poster makers could also go futuristic, showing us how they think the world might look in years to come. You could perhaps look at nature – lifecycles, lifespans, evolution and hibernation – nature is full of timely topics. Your poster must only be A4 or A3 size. It will be scanned so it must be flat. There will be prizes in school and also our 5 best entries from across the school will be entered to a national competition. Here is what the judges will be looking for:

Creativity in approach  – don’t be afraid to think outside the box and present your entry in a slightly different way.

Content – Clear, accurate and informative about a Science topic.

Effective communication – presented and communicated in an engaging way.
