Weekly News 12.01.24
We have reached the end of our first full week back at school, and what a fun-packed week it has been. Thank you all for your efforts on our HOOK day. The children’s costumes were fantastic, and it was clear a lot of thought had gone into them.
Phonics
This week we have continued our Read, Write, Inc lessons in small groups. Some children have begun to learn set 2 sounds. These are all special friends and have a special rhyme. For example, ay- may I play? ee what can you see? Part of learning our sounds is learning the letters, making up the sounds, practising writing and then reading these in words. Most children are recapping set 1 sounds also to consolidate their learning.
Please continue to read with your child at home. When you have completed a book, sign and date their reading record. It is also beneficial for your child to re-read books to help build their confidence and fluency, which is why we change books twice a week.
Maths
This week we explored the composition of numbers 1-5. We discussed how smaller numbers put together can make larger numbers. eg 1 and 4 together make 5. To break numbers up into smaller parts, we used hulk smash to break cube towers. We also used resources such as numicon, tens frames and part whole models to explore the composition.
Next week we will be comparing numbers and quantities.
Thematic Curriculum
We started our new topic this week- SUPERHEROES! Children came to school wearing their home-designed outfits to show their superpowers. As a group, we talked about our superhero and our superpowers, including watering plants to help them grow and shooting bugs from our hands to cover bad guys! We explored the story of Supertato and discussed the characters. To help us retell the story, we made the characters using fruit and vegetables, material for capes, goggly eyes and sticks for the arms and legs. Children explored healthy foods through the eatwell plate, learning about different food types and how much we should eat from each area. Finally, we thought about ways to catch the evil pea from the story. Using our DT skills, we designed and made a trap in groups.
