Maths

This week in maths we have started the term with learning about Number and place value. Our focus this has been to recognise the place value of each digit in a 2-digit number and to order and compare numbers up to 100. Look at our fantastic learning with base 10!

This week in Maths, we have continued learning about Number and Place Value. Our focus has been to recognise the place value of each digit in a 2 digit number and to partition those numbers. For example…

28 = 20 and 8 = 2 tens and 8 ones

We have been using the part, part, whole method to visualise our learning.

Later in the week we discovered we can also partition numbers in different ways that will help us later when adding and subtracting. We used the part, part, whole method to show the learning or we used the Base 10 to aid us.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

English

This week in English we continued looking at the story of Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Book by Lauren Child. This week we focused on expanded noun phrases! An expanded noun phrase gives more detail or information about a noun in a simple noun phrase. This is usually done by adding adjectives to describe the noun in the noun phrase, for example: She walked through the dark, mysterious forest.

We also focused on reading with fluency. Fluency is defined as reading with accuracy (reading words correctly), automaticity (reading words at an appropriate speed without great effort) and prosody (appropriate stress and intonation). We are becoming so much more confident at this. Well done Year 2!

RWI

In RWI this week we have been focusing on building up their fluency when reading, this included their pace, speed, expressions and reading punctuation. Any additional practice at home will be hugely beneficial.

SPaG (Spellings, Punctuation and Grammar)

This week we have been reminding ourselves what capital letters look like by completing a range of matching games. In Spellings, we have been looking at the soft c. When c is in front of an i, y, or e, it is soft and says /s/. For example: city, cycle, and race. When c is in front of any other letter, it is hard and says /k/. For example: camera, car, and cone.

Thematic Curriculum

Science

For our first week of starting the unit Sow and Grow, we became scientists! Specifically we became botanists when looking at parts of plants and identifying flowering plants across the school site. We learnt about flowers such as dandelions, daisies, dog roses, brambles and primrose.

Art

When being artists we learnt how to create brushstrokes using control. We looked at different techniques to help us hold the paintbrush correctly, control the paint such as learning how to load the paintbrush efficiently, creating wide and thin strokes and even creating dots and dashes with larger paintbrushes.

Handwriting

In Handwriting, we have been practising our print letters using the RWI patters. Super handwriting Team Aqua and Team Topaz!

 Next week in:

Next week in English we will be continuing our book Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Book by Lauren Child. Where we will be introducing verbs and adverbs to extend our sentences to make them interesting and unique.

Next week in Maths we will be looking at adding using the partitioning learning we have used so far! We will use base 10 to aid us with this.

Next week in the unit Sow and Grow, we will continue to be scientists when investigating what seeds need to grow!

Other News

We have had a few questions regarding what our days look like and what we are up to. Please find below a timetable of what our week looks like…

Reminders:

- Sports Project is on a Monday afternoon (please wear trainers and normal school clothes).

- PE is on a Tuesday afternoon please can all children come into school in their PE kits (plain navy or black shorts or trousers, plain white t-shirt and a navy sweatshirt).

- AR – Accelerated Reader have completed a whole system update over the summer and the website is currently being updated. Whilst this is still on-going we do not have access to this. We will send updates once this becomes available again.

HARVEST FESTIVAL

Later this term, we will be celebrating Harvest. As part of this, we would like to invite families in to watch our Harvest Assembly. These will take place in the school hall on the following dates:

Tuesday 3^rd October: 9am Year R and 1 and 2.45pm Year 2

Wednesday 4^th October: 9am Year 3 and 4 and 2.30pm Year 5 and 6

Please enter the school via the main school office.

As part of the celebrations, we will also be collecting food that we will be donating to Thanet Food Bank. We will be taking donations between Wednesday 27^th September and Monday 2nd October. If you are able to donate, the food bank accepts any tinned, jarred or packet foods that are in date.

In addition to this, as part of our celebrations all children will be entered into a raffle to win Captain Moo Man and Paulo, our reward bears from last year.
