We have loved being back this week! What an exciting start to the term.

Read, Write Inc

This week we have continued learning our sounds. We started new books, earned new vocabulary and worked hard with our spellings. Our teachers thought we would forget all our special friends over the holiday, but we proved them wrong and showed them just how fast we are getting at spotting them in words - even the chatty ones! Please continue to perfect your reading at home by practising spotting special friends before reading the word to make sure you are reading accurately. For an extra challenge, take note of the punctuation used in your books!

In each reading folder, there is a sound card and list of red words. Any practise with these at home would be extremely helpful and support your child’s reading and writing at home.

Every morning can all children place their reading folders inside their house trays in the conservatory please :) This helps us keep track of their reading and how many books they have read. Thank you. 

Maths

This week in maths we earned about position and direction. We learnt our left and rights, working with our learning partner to describe the position of different objects in the classroom. Then we put them into practice by learning the Cha-Cha Slide. We had so much fun, take a look at our moves below. We also used prepositions and directions to help an alien find the treasure!

Thematic Curriculum

In History this week we earned all about the explorer James Cook and how he followed Venus until he discovered Australia, where he met the indigenous aboriginal people. We learnt how the aborigines did not have a written language, instead stories were told through art using symbols and patterns. Then we created our own aboriginal art using traditional paint colours to represent rivers, sea foam, clouds, sun, grass and land. 

We also had a surprise visit from none other than James Cook himself! He came in to claim the classroom and we were all well and truly shocked! He said he ruled us now and that we had to do what he said, he even said he was going to take all our chairs away! We didn’t think this was very fair and we had a great discussion about the negative impact of explorers and what it would have been like for the aboriginal people at the time. 

We ended the week by learning about another famous explorer, Marco Polo. We enjoyed a range of activities including: writing to inspire others to explore the world, just like Marco Polo did; answering a range of true or false questions about his journey to the Silk road; sketching what we thought Marco Polo saw from his descriptions in his diary; and searching a range of resources to find some more interesting facts about him! British Values Day

On Monday we learnt all about British Values. We learnt about what it means to be in a democracy. We spoke about how we vote for our government and what our MPs choose to spend our money on. We spoke about the fact that we are in a democracy at school. We participated in an election to vote for which packet of biscuits our teacher will buy for us by voting with ballot papers. Then we spoke about the rule of law, what a law is and why they are important. We looked at some examples of times the law has been broken and why it was not safe. Then we participated in circle time and spoke about the golden rules in our lives and what rules we would choose if we were in charge of the school or the country. Finally, we made a class canvas to go up around the school!

World Book Day

World Book Day, for Chilton, will be next week on Friday 3^rd March.  Children are encouraged to dress up as a character from their favourite book. The children will take part in a number of activities throughout the day and they will have the opportunity to share their book / character with their class. World Book Day vouchers will be sent home on World Book Day.  These vouchers can be spent at the School Book Fair that will arrive on Wednesday 22^nd March. 

Story time after school.

A story time activity will take place in the school's library on Monday 27^th March, Tuesday 27^th March and Wednesday 27^th March at 3:15pm and last until 3:30pm.  All children are invited to come and share a story with a member of staff!  

Other news:

Sports Project will remain on Tuesdays, as will P.E. on Thursdays.

Doors will continue to open in the morning at 8:30am. Registration will be at the slightly earlier time of 8:45am (doors close at this time)

Read at 3 - Every Friday at 3 our doors will be open for you to come in and read with your child, please note, this will be for the full 15 minutes and children should not leave any earlier. Their books will be set up and ready for you to come in and enjoy listening to their wonderful reading.

Please listen to your child read as much as possible at home and record this in their reading records. Every week, one child from each class will receive a reading certificate in our Chilton Heroes assembly and there are also individual class prizes to be won :)

Mrs Howard will be teaching Team Topaz on a Wednesday and Team Aqua on a Thursday.
