One Childhood, One Chance

Weekly News 14.10.22

This week, we have continued to read our text Floodland.  It has got really exciting!  At this stage, we have just read that the Eels have battled with an attacking tribe, the Cats, on the flooded land of Eels Island.  From this, we created some gory artwork that was fun to do: by flicking red paint behind a black silhouette, we recreated the battle scene:

After our artwork, we wrote a narrative of the battle, focussing on powerful verb choices and a range of adverbials.  Our SPAG work focussed on the use of apostrophes for possession and we will continue to work on this into next week.

In Maths this week, we worked hard to understand prime, square and cube numbers, which led on to learning a formal written method for long multiplication.

Our Topic of Raiders and Traders has come to an end: we finished the subject by learning about the Normans, who, after winning the Battle of Hastings in 1066, had control of Britain.  We designed our own Motte and Bailey castles and had fun making them at the beach out of sand!  To conclude the topic, we had a Big Fat Quiz (the team names were really funny!):

PE

This week, we have welcomed an Athletics expert, Darren, into our PE lesson.  We demonstrated what we had learned this term and he developed our skills further through some fun activities.  At the end of the session, there was a chance for us to ask him some questions about athletics and how we can continue to stay fit and healthy.

Next week, we will continue to work on our understanding of multiplication using a formal method.  We will then move on to division and choosing a suitable method to solve a range of calculations.Attached below is a Maths Bible about this, which may be useful to you for further understanding.

In English, we hope to finish our text of Floodland and then write a non-chronological report on the subject of Climate Change.  Through discussion, we will explore what the future may look like and consider what we can do to help the planet.
